Our talented and dedicated backstage crew are the beating heart of the theatre – supporting artists and creatives to bring incredible live performances to life.

As our new Deputy Chief Technician (Stage), you’ll work alongside the HMT Chief Technician to deliver world-class technical support for shows, events and conferences at His Majesty’s Theatre (and occasionally across our other venues – the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree). You’ll help ensure everything runs seamlessly from load-in to curtain down, leading the stage crew and maintaining the highest technical standards that Aberdeen Performing Arts is known for.

What we’re looking for

We’re searching for a technically skilled, hands-on individual with solid experience in stage operations and performing arts production. You’ll have good knowledge of lighting, sound, and rigging, and you’ll be confident identifying and fixing technical issues on the fly.

You’ll also be someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment – a natural leader who can motivate others and bring calm, professional energy to every challenge.

You’ll need to have:

  • Experience working in technical roles within the performing arts sector.
  • Experience leading or supervising a team.
  • Knowledge of stage operations, health and safety practices, and technical equipment.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.

Bonus points if you have specialist qualifications (e.g. HND or degree in a technical field), a First Aid or IOSH Managing Safely certificate, or licenses such as forklift or driving – but enthusiasm, teamwork and a proactive attitude are what matter most.

What you’ll be doing

  • Liaising with the HMT Chief Technician to ensure all technical requirements for shows and events are met.
  • Leading the stage crew during load-ins and get-outs.
  • Supporting the Chief Technician across all aspects of production delivery.
  • Managing scheduling, advancing performances, and signing off timesheets.
  • Maintaining a positive, motivated backstage environment.
  • Acting as Duty Technician for performances when required.
  • Ensuring health and safety standards are met at all times, including inductions for visiting companies.
  • Overseeing the setup, operation and maintenance of stage, lighting and sound equipment.
  • Carrying out repairs, inspections and preventative maintenance to keep our spaces and kit in first-class condition.

We’re a creative, collaborative and values-led organisation bringing arts, creativity and live performance to all. Our people are at the centre of what we do – we value Curiosity, Optimism, Loyalty, Resilience and Teamwork, and we’re always looking for people who share that spark.
