Location: 36 Group, 4 Field Court, Grays Inn, London, WC1R 5EF

Reporting to: Senior Clerk

Experience: Minimum of 8 years' experience working in a family set of chambers

Purpose and Summary of the Role: The Public Law Children (Care) Clerk plays a vital role in enhancing the profile and operations of the Care Team as part of 36 Family. Representing the key link between public law clients and Chambers' members, the primary purpose of the role is to ensure the efficient management and development of the care team. This includes fostering new relationships with solicitors, increasing revenue for members, supporting the professional development of the team, and ensuring the highest standards of client care and service delivery.

Key Objectives and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Team and Business Development
    • Enhance the profile of the Care Team, both internally and externally.
    • Drive business growth by establishing new solicitor relationships.
    • Maintain and enhance existing solicitor relationships.
    • Undertake Practice Development meetings and processes for all members of the Care Team.
    • Identify business development and marketing opportunities, reporting to the Senior Clerk.
    • Assist in the growth of the Care Team by identifying lateral recruitment opportunities.
    • Represent Chambers at marketing events.
  • Case Management and Diary Coordination
    • Effectively manage the diaries of Care Team members with support from junior clerks.
    • Facilitate fair case allocation that aligns with members' development requirements and compliance regulation.
    • Assist the team with the development of leader and junior relationships and work.
    • Manage fixing of cases for all members of the Care team.
  • Training and Support
    • Assist in training the wider Family Clerking team to develop knowledge of Public Law work.
    • Provide guidance, delegation and supervision for less experienced family staff members.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Awareness of relevant payment rates and regimes, liaising with the fees department as required.
    • Stay updated with changes in internal and external policies and procedures and suggest modifications where applicable.
    • Provide cover for other Family clerking team members during absences or peak periods.
    • Deputise for the First Junior as required.
    • Undertake any additional tasks as reasonably requested by Senior Management.

    • Excellent communication skills with a high standard of spoken and written English and an excellent telephone manner.

    • Able to deal with a wide range of people effectively.

    • Polite and friendly manner and ability to deal with professional clients on the phone and in person.
    • Willingness to learn and take on additional duties.

    • Able to multi-task, prioritise and take responsibility for own work.
    • Takes a quality approach with great attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.

  • 4. IT Skills and Numeric
    • Preferably trained to use the LEX system, otherwise training will be given.
    • Computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
    • Adept at learning new ways of working and new IT systems.
  • 5. Team Skills
    • A good team member who can forge strong working relationships with colleagues, barristers and Chambers clients and supervise more junior members of the team.
  • 6. Negotiating and Persuading
    • Good at negotiating and persuading both internal and external clients.
  • 7. Other
    • Experience of working in a professional office environment is essential as is awareness of good client care standards and working practices.
