About Chambers:
The 36 Group is a leading Chambers based in Gray's Inn. It is one of the largest London based sets with over 150 barristers, mediators and arbitrators. They are organised into five main practice groups: 36 Family, 36 Crime, 36 Employment & Property, 36 Public and Human Rights and 36 Stone (International Trade and Shipping). Each operates as though it were an individual set of Chambers, with their own team heads, practice and business development managers and clerking teams.

36 Crime is a team of criminal specialists, including 5 King's Counsel and 50 juniors, who undertake high-profile and complex cases nationally and internationally, providing advocacy across the full spectrum of criminal offending.

About the Role:
The 36 Group are currently seeking a Junior Crime Clerk to join their well-respected clerking team and members.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Administration of the crime clerks' inbox daily
  • Process attendance notes and HRSs that go into the action box, add new dates to the diary and pass any issues including clashes onto the more senior juniors to deal with. Deal with 1st stage late forms escalations
  • Entering electronic documents onto LEX, dealing with CCDCS invites, Common platform management, Egress and similar systems
  • Assist the more senior juniors with the daily diary and any other diary management tasks they allocate
  • Book in cases and recommend suitable counsel in line with the 36 Crime Team business plan and individual members' practice development aims
  • Assist with the management of long-term diary returns/clashes/gap filling and 10-day plus cases
  • Check all private & Local Authority cases have agreements in place and report to the Criminal Practice Manager any cases that do not
  • Check all VHCC & PCA's have adequate hours agreed and the correct paperwork to support it
  • Carry the out of hours team mobile and deal with calls in a timely manner
  • Manage direct access cases in line with the 36 Group policy
  • Assist with the development of individual practices by recognising development opportunities and following them through
  • Assist with the work development and marketing aims in the Crime business plan and as directed by the Criminal Practice Manager

To work in consultation with all relevant staff to:

  • Ensure the fair allocation of appropriate work to members consistent with their development requirements and/ or in the interests of the Crime Team
  • Ensure the Team business development aims are achieved
  • Ensure that all staff are sufficiently supported and supervised

Other Responsibilities

  • To be aware of all relevant payment regimes & rates and how they operate although the responsibility for billing cases lies with the fees department
  • Keep up to date with all changes in policy and procedure both internally and externally and suggest review/changes when appropriate.
  • To provide cover for other members of the criminal clerking team during periods of annual leave, illness or busy times.
  • To provide relevant reports/information to members, senior staff and other entitled recipients upon request.
  • To assist in the preparation of tendering/contracting information and documentation when requested to do so.
  • To attend team, clerking or individual barrister meetings as required or requested.

Manual:

  • Occasional lifting and carrying and trolley use
