Job Description: The Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine (BGM) team at AbbVie is a critical Discovery engine enabling our ambition to become the top biopharma company in the world. We are combining our best-in-class internal technical platforms and the rapidly growing scientific ecosystem in China to deliver transformational large molecule clinical development candidates to our patients at unparalleled speed. To sustain our R&D pipeline momentum, we are looking for a key leader who can cement closer collaboration between our US BGM teams and our Chinese partners while supporting diligence efforts for the numerous business development and venture investment opportunities. This individual will also work closely with partner functions such as Discovery Therapeutic Areas, Small Molecule Therapeutics, Development Sciences, Tech Operations, and Clinical Development and build a small team focused on Biotherapeutics, Genetic Medicine, and Protein Sciences activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide real-time insights into the Chinese regulatory landscape, market trends, and competitive shifts for large molecule R&D.
  • Identify, evaluate, and manage a network of large molecule CROs in China and facilitate close collaboration with the BGM teams in US.
  • Support evaluation and diligence of large molecule business development and venture investment opportunities in China.
  • Facilitate large molecule Discovery collaborations with various Chinese biotech and academic teams.
  • Align molecule scale up with our Development Science and Tech Operation teams.
  • Manage a team of 3 project leads focused on biotherapeutics (monoclonal antibodies, multi-specific antibodies, antibody conjugates), genetic medicine (siRNA, mRNA, and viral particles), protein sciences (antigens, structural studies, biophysical characterization), and AI/ML.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in life sciences, preferably in biotherapeutics/genetic medicine.
  • 10 years of experience, including 5 years in pharma/biotech, preferably at Chinese CROs and pharma/biotech companies with direct experience identifying, evaluating, and managing CROs.
  • Fluent in both English and Chinese and a strong understanding of the R&D cultures of both countries.
  • Lead, mentor, and cultivate leaders of diverse teams in both regions, ensuring alignment with the organization’s objectives and fostering professional growth.
  • Strong understanding of the drug discovery and development, regulatory, and commercialization process for evaluation of pharmaceutical opportunities.
  • Project management/leadership skills to lead/manage multifunctional teams to evaluate target opportunities and produce high quality analyses.
  • Ability to drive projects to deliver timely results and follow through on commitments.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate business strategies and capabilities internally and externally, present individual and team recommendations clearly and concisely, and promote cross-functional communication.
  • Proactive and engaging social and networking skills to reach out to a broad range of industry decision makers to keep abreast of emerging opportunities.
  • Needs to be able to manage high level, cross-functional teams on tight timelines and focused execution.
  • Individual must be able to act independently without daily onsite managerial supervision.

This role is based in Shanghai, China, with expected on-site presence of ?? days per week. The role will require domestic and international travel of ~25%.
