ROLE OVERVIEW:
Operating in a technically complex and fast-paced environment, this role requires excellent technical confidence as well as the ability to work and communicate calmly under pressure.
Reporting to the Head of Automation, the Deputy Head of Automation will support the Head of Automation, and assist in guiding the automation team, running show tracks, daily and weekly inspections and safety checks, maintenance and pre-show set up, working with the technical, stage management and venue operations teams when required.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate automation consoles and systems, on rotation, during shows, maintenance periods, as well as during rehearsals.
- Assist with departmental administration including the scheduling of show staff, coordinating onboarding, training and rehearsals.
- Maintain consistency and quality across all shows and maintenance operations.
- Support in communicating with automation systems manufacturers and suppliers as required for troubleshooting, inspection and maintenance purposes.
- Help ensure all automation equipment is cleaned, maintained and in good and safe-working order for all performances, and remain compliant with relevant statutory regulations and industry best practice.
- To ensure maintenance and inspections records are accurate and kept up to date, as appropriate.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues efficiently during rehearsals and live shows.
- Support the continuous improvement of workflows and standards.
- To carry out all necessary administrative work associated with job requirements such as keeping accurate and timely records of all work and tasks from receiving jobs through to completion.
- To undertake safety, health, and technical training as required.
- To report any OH&S hazards or concerns immediately.
- To carry out all other duties as reasonably expected of a Deputy Head of Department, as requested by the Technical Director and Head of Automation.
ABOUT YOU:
- Minimum three years’ experience in large scale technical entertainment, or similar.
- Competent working knowledge of show automation systems including but not limited to, console operation and programming, axis testing, drive repair etc.
- Ability to take responsibility for controlling and maintaining automated machinery that can cause harm to others if maintained and operated incorrectly.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail, maintaining a positive attitude and to communicate clearly under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of current, relevant health and safety practices.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- A calm and practical approach to technical troubleshooting.
- Ability to operate required hand and power tools as required by the position.
Desirable:
- Rigging experience an asset, including familiarity with fall protection systems.
- First Aid at Work an asset.
- IPAF – 1B certification an asset.
- Understanding of show control networks.
- General understanding of other technical departments and how they intertwine.
- Experience in leading and managing teams in a mid to large scale show environment.
