This QA/QC Engineer opportunity exists with a tier one contractor delivering a £200M major civil engineering project in Plymouth. This major defence project supports a substantial upgrade in the UK's ability to service the national submarine fleet.
Your role as QA/QC Engineer will oversee complex, varied and interesting works including below ground Civils, M&E, topside equipment including cranes, bollards, roadways quay wall, integrated services, new modular buildings, with interface across other sections including sheet piling and temporary works.
Role overview
QA/QC Engineer (or Quality Engineer / Quality Technician) supporting the contractors delivery teams on civil engineering and marine works, ensuring that all construction activities comply with the company Quality Management Systems and project requirements.
QA/QC Key responsibilities
- Implementation of the project Quality Plan and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for structures, concrete, earthworks, marine works and building services, ensuring required inspections and tests are carried out and properly recorded.
- Review drawings, specifications, method statements and supplier documentation to make sure the correct standards, tolerances and test regimes are understood and applied on site.
- Carry out site inspections and surveillance checks, identify non‑conformances, raise and track NCRs and corrective actions, and support root‑cause analysis and close‑out.
- Coordinate material approvals (concrete mixes, aggregates, reinforcement, coatings, etc.), review certificates and test results, and maintain up‑to‑date quality records for handover (databooks, as‑builts, O&M information).
- Support internal and external audits (client, third‑party or corporate), prepare evidence, follow up on findings, and help drive continuous improvement actions.
Skills and experience typically required
- Background in civil engineering / construction with experience in quality management or site engineering roles that had a strong QA/QC component.
- Familiarity with quality systems, ITPs, test regimes for civil works (concrete, earthworks, reinforcement, welding/coatings where relevant) and typical main‑contractor documentation.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to challenge non‑compliant work diplomatically, and good communication skills for dealing with site teams, designers and client representatives.
