Freelance Opportunity - Major Infrastructure Scheme

£650 – £725 per shift (PAYE Umbrella)

Start: ASAP

Duration: Long-term (through to at least 2028, potentially 2030)

An immediate opportunity has arisen for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to join a major, long-term civil engineering infrastructure programme in the Southwest. This is a high-value, complex scheme offering genuine continuity of work for the right individual. With delivery scheduled through to at least 2028 and potentially extending beyond, this role provides rare long-term freelance security on a flagship infrastructure project.

The Role

As Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will take full commercial responsibility for key work packages, leading cost control, contractual management, and commercial strategy across significant elements of the programme. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the commercial function for allocated sections of works
  • Managing subcontract procurement, accounts, and final accounts
  • Producing accurate cost forecasts and CVRs
  • Administering NEC contract processes
  • Driving change management, including compensation events and early warnings
  • Supporting senior project leadership with commercial strategy and risk mitigation

A strong, demonstrable understanding of change management is essential. This project requires a commercially proactive individual who can manage high-value variations, protect margin, and maintain contractual control in a fast-paced environment.

About You

  • Proven experience operating as a Managing QS or Senior QS on major infrastructure or civil engineering schemes
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts
  • Extensive experience managing change and compensation events
  • Confident managing client-facing commercial discussions
  • Able to lead, challenge, and add value within a large project team

Working Arrangement

  • 3 days onsite (Southwest location)
  • 2 days remote working agreed
  • PAYE Umbrella engagement
  • Competitive rate: £650 – £725 per shift
