Location: Ellesmere Port, Cheshire (3 days a week)
Rate: £280 per day (Outside IR35)

Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Telecom & Network Infrastructure Engineer with 6‑10 years of hands‑on expertise in managing industrial communication systems across a large plant environment. The role involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing telecom, network, and control communication systems supporting critical plant operations.
Key Responsibilities
Fiber Optic Network Engineering (Enhanced Scope)
- Install, terminate, test, and commission fiber optic cables (single‑mode and multi‑mode).
- Perform fiber splicing (fusion and mechanical) and OTDR testing.
- Diagnose and resolve fiber faults, including attenuation loss, breaks, and connectivity issues.
- Maintain and manage optic links for DCS LAN, SCADA systems, CCTV, and telecom networks.
- Conduct fiber route planning, cable laying, and documentation.
- Ensure proper cable management, labeling, and patch panel maintenance.
- Handle fiber infrastructure upgrades and expansions across plant areas.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspection of fiber networks.
- Ensure compliance with industrial standards and safety (ATEX where applicable).
- Maintain records of:
- Fiber core utilization
- Splicing reports
- OTDR test results
- Support high‑availability redundant fiber ring networks where applicable.
Telecom & Communication Systems
- Manage and support Business LAN and Process LAN shifts, ensuring continuous connectivity across the plant.
- Handle telephone installations, movements, and fault resolution (1st and 2nd line support).
- Maintain and troubleshoot site‑wide telephony systems, including:
- Mini exchange systems
- Fax machines
- ADSL connectivity
- Perform underground cable jointing and termination (200/100/50/20 pair telephone cables).
Network & Infrastructure
- Install, configure, and maintain:
- Fibre optic networks and optic links (DCS LAN)
- 33KV SCADA LAN and modem links
- Telemetry point‑to‑point modem links
- Microwave communication systems (Process Microwave)
- Implement and maintain site‑wide Wi‑Fi infrastructure.
- Manage third‑party networks and services across the site.
CCTV & Security Systems
- Maintain and repair:
- CCTV systems (NWEP, Security, Process CCTV)
- Access control systems (Gate access, intercoms)
- Install and maintain Stanlow and Gate intercom systems.
- Support on‑site and off‑site surveillance systems.
Alarm, Safety & Control Systems
- Maintain and ensure functionality of:
- Fire alarm systems, VESDA control, and smoke detection beams
- Site urgent communication systems (SUCS)
- On‑site and off‑site sirens
- Provide and maintain alarm and control signals including fire water pump systems.
Projects & Installations
- Deliver major communication infrastructure projects.
- Execute:
- Full office setups (data, comms, electrical)
- Shutdown infrastructure installation and maintenance
- Video conferencing (VC) system installations and support
Operations & Maintenance
- Maintain cable management systems across multiple sites.
- Perform PAT testing and maintain inspection records (added advantage).
- Ensure stock management and documentation is up to date.
- Provide 24/7 on‑call support (rota basis) for telecom, radio, and CCTV systems.
Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
- Coordinate and supervise third‑party vendors (e.g., BT, C&W, ADT) during site visits.
- Ensure compliance with site standards and safety protocols.
Required Skills & Experience
- 6‑10 years of experience in:
- Telecom, Data Communication, or Network Infrastructure
- Industrial/Plant environment (preferred)
- Strong hands‑on skills in:
- Fibre optics, LAN/WAN, SCADA networks
- CCTV, access control, and alarm systems
- Telemetry, microwave, and modem communications
- Experience in cable jointing and termination.
- Knowledge of ATEX compliance and industrial safety standards.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across multi‑technology systems.
Qualifications
- Diploma / Degree in:
- Electronics / Telecommunications / IT / Electrical Engineering
- Relevant certifications (preferred):
- CCNA / Network certifications
- Fibre optic certification
- Health & Safety / ATEX awareness
