Aatom Recruitment is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer – Facilities & Environment to join a Local Authority on an initial 6-month contract, with a strong possibility of extension.

The Role

You will play a key role in delivering a high-quality Environmental Health service, focusing on housing standards, complaint investigations, and regulatory enforcement. This includes work on HMO licensing and mobile home site regulation, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and local policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate housing complaints and service requests, ensuring appropriate remedial action is taken
  • Conduct proactive and reactive property inspections to identify poor housing conditions
  • Enforce housing standards through statutory notices and legal action where required
  • Manage and support HMO licensing and compliance activities
  • Undertake responsibilities relating to the licensing and regulation of mobile home sites
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to residents, tenants, landlords, and businesses
  • Prepare legal case files and represent the Council in court where necessary
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of private sector housing strategies
  • Review and comment on planning applications from an Environmental Health perspective
  • Maintain accurate records using Uniform / IDOX systems and internal databases
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners, including Fire Services, Housing Associations, and voluntary organisations
  • Deliver community engagement activities, including presentations and advice sessions

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied workload
  • Team player with a flexible and proactive approach
  • Ability to contribute to service improvements and quality procedures

Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong working knowledge of Environmental Health legislation, particularly housing and nuisance
  • Experience within a similar Environmental Health role (Local Authority experience desirable)
  • Familiarity with Environmental Health systems and Microsoft Office
  • Understanding of regulatory processes and enforcement practices

Qualifications

  • A recognised qualification in Environmental Health or a related discipline

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours duties
  • Ability to confidently handle challenging situations, including contact with potentially difficult or vulnerable individuals
  • Experience or training in conflict management is advantageous
