£40,000 Basic + Uncapped Commission (realistic Year One OTE of £57,000) plus private health, life assurance, pension and progression opportunities. Based in Chelmsford, our client is a market-leading manufacturer and supplier of process control, automation, and energy management equipment, each with a unique technical advantage, allowing them to take on complex, high-value engineering challenges that competitors cannot match. The company enjoys an entrepreneurial culture and a proven history of promoting from within.

Working within an established internal sales team of four and closely with the technical engineering team, this role blends inbound technical advisory work with structured, proactive business development. You will act as a trusted advisor to end-user clients, turning routine product enquiries into comprehensive, high-value solutions. The role is 80% inbound leads and account management, with 1 hour per day dedicated to proactive business development, primarily for dormant accounts.

The role involves handling incoming technical inquiries regarding product specifications, drawings, and applications to help customers select the right solutions. It requires someone with a technical sales background who is inquisitive and likes to understand how clients operate. The ideal candidate will look beyond the initial inquiry to comprehend what the client aims to achieve, often transforming a £5K product enquiry into a £250K project. The role necessitates spotting opportunities and upselling.

What is Needed to Apply to the Role of Internal Technical Sales Engineer:

  • An engineering background, technical sales or a strong technical aptitude is essential.
  • You must be comfortable discussing technical specifications and working with clients and your technical team to fully scope projects (deep product expertise is not required as full technical support is available).
  • Proven experience or a clear comfort level with phone-based sales, cold calling, and handling objections.
  • The ability to ask probing questions, identify commercial opportunities, and close deals.
  • You must be within a commutable distance of the office in Chelmsford, Essex.
