Principal Linux Systems Engineer – Network systems

Contract opportunity for a Principal Linux Systems Engineer experienced within network-focused systems domains with a growing Broadband provider.

Hybrid role 2-3 days onsite per week – Liverpool Street station

3-month rolling contract

40% night work for changes

In this role you will develop and maintain a portfolio of high-availability and business-critical Linux servers and applications, setting technical direction and taking ownership of applications while delivery best practise, automated builds and configuration management.

Key skills requirement:

  • Senior level expertise within Linux (RedHat), VMWare & Azure
  • Strong working experience with Solarwinds, Redhat echo system & Ansible
  • Strong experience with VPNs between different systems & cloud network
  • Strong experience working with databases e.g. MS-SQL and Postgres SQL

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, deploy, administer and support an array of high-availability Linux servers (Redhat/ CentOS / Ubuntu)
  • Implement and administer cyber engineering tools like e.g. Crowdstrike, defender, Qualys etc.
  • Re-engineer any existing standalone solutions to be highly available.
  • Manage DevOps CI/CD pipeline environment and administer GitHub, Ansible, Puppet, Jenkins scripts.
  • Implement TSA, NIST and ISO standards and troubleshoot the compliance issues.
  • Develop and implement system automation scripts and tools to streamline operations.
  • Own and deliver systems-related projects using project management methodologies.
  • Manage and Secure Database Clusters in Linux platforms.
  • Apply security best practices to protect systems against vulnerabilities.
  • Experience in Redhat satellite configuration and management.
  • Provide on-call support for out-of-hours troubleshooting of Service-impacting failures.
  • Integrate the Linux environment to monitoring and logging solutions like Graylog, Zabbix, Solarwinds, Elastic etc.
  • Proficiency in Linux distributions such as Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, or SUSE.
  • Deploy and maintain predominantly on prem Virtual Systems & applications using automation processes
  • Develop and maintain backup and recovery solutions and participate in disaster recovery planning and execution

Key skills and experience required:

  • 15+ years experience with 7+ years experience in network-focused systems domain
  • Expertise within Linux-based systems – Redhat Ecosystem (RHEL, RH Satellite, RH Insights)
  • Configuration management using Ansible is essential
  • Good Python knowledge or other scripting language
  • Experience creating and maintaining high-availability clusters of systems
  • Solid understanding of security best practices and able to implement them
  • Strong experience working with databases such as MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL
  • Strong experience with Solarwinds
  • Strong experience with VPN's with different systems & cloud network
  • Experienced with Cloud infrastructure – Azure
  • Experience with virtualized environments and containerisation technologies – e.g. VMWare, Docker, Kubernetes
  • Experience with configuration management tools – e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef
  • Knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DCHP, SSH)

Certifications ideally sought:

  • Redhat specialist
  • Azure Cloud Practitioner
  • Security Certified Engineer
