The Role
As an Engineering Buyer, you will be responsible for sourcing, negotiating and purchasing engineered components, raw materials and technical services to support manufacturing operations and engineering projects. You'll play a key role in ensuring quality, cost-effectiveness and on-time delivery while building strong supplier relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and procure engineered components, raw materials, tooling and technical services from approved suppliers.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to ensure accurate purchasing.
- Negotiate supplier pricing, contracts and commercial terms to achieve best value.
- Develop and manage supplier relationships, monitoring performance and driving continuous improvement.
- Work closely with Engineering, Production and Quality teams to ensure purchased items meet technical specifications and quality standards.
- Collaborate with group purchasing teams to leverage volume purchasing opportunities.
- Maintain accurate procurement data, including supplier performance, pricing, lead times and inventory information.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through alternative sourcing, supplier development and value engineering.
- Resolve supply chain issues, including delivery delays, quality concerns and specification queries.
- Support new product introductions by sourcing prototype materials and coordinating supplier involvement.
- Ensure procurement activities comply with company policies and relevant industry standards.
About You
We're looking for someone who has:
- Previous experience in an Engineering Buyer, Technical Buyer or Purchasing role within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- A strong understanding of manufacturing processes, engineering materials and supply chain principles.
- Experience negotiating with suppliers and managing supplier performance.
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and procurement software.
- Excellent communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to build effective working relationships across engineering, production and quality functions.
- Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
Desirable
- Degree, HNC or HND in Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain or a related discipline.
- CIPS qualification (or currently working towards one).
- Experience of strategic sourcing, project procurement or working with global suppliers.
- Understanding of quality management systems and industry regulations.
