A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Litigation Solicitor to join a well-established and ambitious law firm in Chelmsford as Head of Litigation.
This is a key leadership appointment for a commercially minded solicitor with a minimum of 5 years' PQE who is looking to take ownership of a growing department, lead a team of legal professionals and play an integral role in the firm's continued success.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with excellent leadership and client relationship skills, helping to drive the department forward while maintaining exceptional standards of legal service.
The Role
As Head of Litigation, you will oversee a varied caseload of contentious matters while providing strategic direction and support to the wider team.
Responsibilities will include:
- Managing a broad range of litigation matters from instruction through to resolution.
- Supervising and mentoring solicitors, paralegals and support staff.
- Leading the development and growth of the Litigation Department.
- Maintaining and developing key client relationships.
- Advising individuals, businesses and organisations on complex disputes.
- Handling matters through negotiation, mediation and court proceedings where necessary.
- Monitoring departmental performance, productivity and profitability.
- Ensuring compliance with SRA regulations and risk management procedures.
- Contributing to business development initiatives and networking activities.
- Working closely with senior management to support the firm's strategic objectives.
- Identifying opportunities for departmental expansion and service development.

The caseload is expected to include a mix of:
- Commercial litigation
- Contract disputes
- Property litigation
- Landlord and tenant disputes

About You
The successful candidate will possess:
- Qualified Solicitor in England & Wales with a minimum of 5 years' PQE.
- Strong litigation experience with the ability to manage complex matters independently.
- Previous supervisory, management or team leadership experience.
- Excellent advocacy, negotiation and client management skills.
- Commercial awareness and a proactive approach to business development.
- Strong organisational and case management abilities.
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.
- A strategic mindset with the ambition to contribute to the firm's long-term growth.
- Experience developing and mentoring junior team members.
