That defines the purpose and direction of the start-up digital media site A Hot Set.

A Hot Set covers the news and stories across the global entertainment industry with an eye trained toward people of color. Through in-depth commentary, statistical insights, historical analysis, profiles, updates, and special coverage, we keep you well-informed and on the pulse of the ever-evolving role POCs play in shaping the future of entertainment media.

Note: Before reading further, this virtual unpaid internship role can also be used for class credit or as a first-tier experience (12 months).

Are you the Janice Min, Nekesa Mumbi Moody, or Patrick Gomez of the next generation? A Hot Set is looking for a long-term (12-month commitment) Editor. The position of the Editor is unpaid, part-time, and will be online based out of your area of residence as A Hot Set will have an all-volunteer staff of writers (including the Publisher).

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a ranking site manager under the direction of the Publisher.
  • Assists in selecting and supervising the site contributors.
  • Assists in disseminating assignments that are congruent with the site's target demographic.
  • Works with contributors to develop AP Style articles from original ideas to completed articles.
  • Reviewing and approving content. Cross-check all citations and examine all the references.
  • Conforms to deadlines and production requirements.
  • Assists in creating and disseminating all staff-related information.

Official Start Date: ASAP

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this Journalism Editor Internship must possess the following qualifications:

Required:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with expert-level proficiency in AP Style writing format.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of diverse international social and political landscapes.
  • Proven capacity to analyze and interpret international social and political events from multiple perspectives.
  • Ability to oversee the development of intentional social and political news features covering international topics, presenting multifaceted views on complex issues.
  • Exceptional time management skills with a track record of meeting stringent deadlines.
  • Expert knowledge of communication and mass media principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in learning and adapting to new online content media platforms.
  • Previous editorial or content management experience, or demonstrated success in managing a relevant site independently.
  • Capability to effectively manage and lead a team of seven reporters.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree or current graduate-level studies in Journalism, English, or a closely related field.
  • Prior writing, reporting, or editing experience with academic publications or other reputable outlets.

Additional Information:

  • Duration: 12-month commitment.
  • Position Type: Virtual, part-time, unpaid internship.
  • Start Date: Immediate.
