The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, delivering, supporting and maintaining secure, resilient and supportable infrastructure solutions across AJ Bell’s technology estate. The role acts as a senior technical contributor within the Infrastructure team. It owns technical design and delivery for medium-sized infrastructure changes and projects, understands dependencies between systems and workstreams, guides Infrastructure Engineers, and ensures work is delivered in line with agreed standards, controls and security expectations.
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is expected to be highly technically skilled and experienced across multiple infrastructure technologies. The role balances hands-on delivery with planning, technical leadership, stakeholder communication, operational support, documentation, risk awareness and security-focused best practice. The role supports the reliability, security, scalability and maintainability of AJ Bell’s infrastructure services, while supporting and enabling the business to achieve its regulatory requirements, including Consumer Duty.
Competence and Knowledge
- Strong experience in an Infrastructure Engineer or similar technical role, preferably gained in a Financial Services, regulated or business-critical technology environment.
- Experience designing, delivering and supporting production infrastructure services.
- Ability to own technical design and delivery for medium-sized infrastructure changes or projects.
- Strong understanding of dependencies between infrastructure technologies, applications, networks, identity, security and operational processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and support timely incident and problem resolution.
- Experience producing technical documentation, implementation plans, support handover material and standards documentation.
- Experience working within change control, operational governance and service management processes.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks, decisions and trade-offs clearly.
- Ability to coach, guide and support less experienced engineers.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver work to agreed timescales.
- Strong understanding of security, resilience, monitoring, capacity and maintainability considerations.
- Experience working with suppliers and third-party support providers where required.
Knowledge
- VMware technologies including Dell VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure, Aria Suite, NSX, HCX, vSAN, VCF and VMC.
- Load balancing technologies such as VMware AVI, NSX or equivalent.
- Fortinet SD-WAN and firewall technologies, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer and FortiClient VPN or equivalent.
- Microsoft Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux server configuration and management.
- Monitoring and observability tooling such as SolarWinds, Opsgenie, Grafana, Prometheus or equivalent.
- Storage, backup and disaster recovery technologies, including SAN/NAS, replication, snapshotting and recovery testing concepts.
- Identity and access technologies such as Active Directory, ADFS, SSO and MFA.
- Cisco networking technologies, Cisco ISE and Catalyst Centre or equivalent demonstrable networking experience.
- Infrastructure performance and capacity monitoring, planning and remediation.
- AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, container platform concepts and cloud-based infrastructure patterns desirable.
- Infrastructure as Code, automation, scripting and CI/CD practices desirable with experience of Terraform preferred.
- Security tooling and practices including patch management, vulnerability management, SIEM, EDR, PAM and micro-segmentation desirable.
- ITIL service management and PRINCE2, Agile, Scrum or equivalent project delivery experience beneficial.
