: Initial will be 9-5, Monday to Friday evolving to full shift pattern operated on a 12hr working shift to cover a 24/7 rota, based upon a contracted 40 hours per week, as site develops

Role Summary

The Shift Team Leader will Operate, Supervise and provide direction to the Operations shift team at the Royal Wootton Bassett Biochar site.

To plan, implement and monitor systems and processes through good practice to maximise the process whilst ensuring health, safety and environmental compliance on a 24 hour shift system.

The Shift Team Leader will be the Senior Authorised Person (SAP) complying with the A Healthier Earth (AHE) Safe System of Work.

This role includes the supervision of both AHE staff and Contractors when carrying out activities on site.

The Shift Team Leader will work within the Maintenance Department when required, and will implement and carry out maintenance activities to ensure plant availability is maximised.

Chair the daily meeting to review Environmental, Health & Safety, overnight activities and issues along with planned activities for the coming day.

Build and maintain relationships with colleagues to ensure effective communication across the site.

You will be required to be totally flexible and carry out other duties identified from time to time.

This role is a partially split role, dividing time between the plant operations area, the control room operation, and providing the safe systems of work.

This is a multiskilled role and as such you will be expected to be flexible and carry out other duties as necessary ensuring site objectives are achieved.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

• Leadership
• Lead by example and manage Process Operators performance to ensure the team is working efficiently and effectively.
• Organise and participate in activities, as required from time-to-time, that are not standard but assist in the development of the Plant or the business.
• o Be prepared to stand in for other Operations team members when required, with knowledge of their roles and responsibilities.
• Lead and oversee all shift activities including Plant, Mobile Plant and Control Room Operations, to ensure that all activities are undertaken to the highest performance, quality, health and safety, and environmental standards.
• Safety
• Ensure that works are undertaken in accordance with safe methods of work, using standard operating procedures, correct PPE, safety assessments, and help develop these methods of work where they do not exist.
• To be the Senior Authorised Person (under site Safety Rules) and provide Safety from the System for ALL maintenance tasks.
• Application of the site Safety Rules, from RAMS review, application of Isolations and Preparation, Issue and Cancellation of Permits.
• Leading role in safety assessments and meetings (e. g. Hazop, Risk Assessments) relating to plant modifications, additions etc.
• Oversight of the immediate health and safety of AHE staff, contractors, visitors and others in the plant area.
• Ensure the working environment is in a safe, clean condition, including organising periodic cleaning of operational and welfare areas.
• Planning
• To take direction from the Site Manager, or Maintenance Supervisor, as to the work needed and timelines required.
• Organise and undertake, in consultation with the Site Manager, all required work activities.

Ensuring that tasks are prioritised and completed in a timely way to ensure that the Plants schedules are fully met.

• Support the Site Manger with plant performance issues and resolutions.
• Take personal responsibility for the quality and completion of the work tasks given to the Operations team.
• Process
• Full understanding of the Biochar process and outstanding understanding of the Control System operation and materials required to maintain production, with ability to predict potential future events before they occur and take preventative action to either prevent their occurrence or mitigate the impact.
• Leadership of technical assessments of plant performance and any operational failings.
• Preparation of and recording quantities of all materials needed (inc. chemicals, gases, feedstocks, etc.), reporting any deficiencies in a timely manner to permit early resolution.
• Recording quantities of all Biochar produced and ensure the labelling of Biochar completed correctly.
• Recording quantities of all waste materials produced, co-ordinating with the Plant Manager for their safe storage and disposal.
• Ensure all waste materials delivered, produced, stored and removed from site are managed in line with the required legislation and site requirements.
• Maintain the safe operation of the Process and any auxiliary equipment at all times.
• Developments
• Support the site maintenance operations and ensuring safety systems of work are in place for these activities.
• Assist in ensuring skills and competence are relevant by developing, undertaking and delivering suitable training and development.
• Carryout the performance appraisals of Direct Reports, put in smart objectives and development plan, ensuring that it is completed.
• Critical assessment of training and development needs for the operations team.
• Leading contribution to the engineering design, development and implementation of new and existing equipment, and comply with the needs of the change management process for the plant.
• Actively seek and identify opportunities for improvement to plant operations and agree corrective actions with the Site Manager.
• Reporting
• Monitor and report progress, including technical assessment of issues and development of plans to prevent future occurrence.
• Update and maintain accurate records, including audits, inspections, calibration records, plant operations data, turnaround data, documents and drawings relating to the plant.

Collating and logging all information appropriately as agreed.

• Organise the preparation of and record quantities of all materials needed (inc. chemicals, gases, feedstocks, etc.), reporting any deficiencies in a timely manner to permit early resolution.
• Record quantities of all materials produced (inc. Biochar, wastes, etc.), coordinating with the Site Manager for their safe storage and disposal.
• Use of the stock management system and ensure that key stocks and consumables are maintained at appropriate levels, reporting any stock shortage or equipment failures or other deficiencies in a timely manner to permit early resolution.
• Leadership and organisation of clear, concise, and relevant reporting of plant operations during and between shifts, including tracking boards, logs, shift handovers, and other records.
• Leadership and organisation of management reports of plant operations, and performance.
• Update the shift log including plant and process changes, diligent shift handover to ensure effective communication to the following shift.
• Key abilities for role
• Ability to work safely, champion and contribute to plant safety (e. g. Hazops, risk assessments, use of safety equipment, etc), and ensure the safety of others.
• Ability to supervise successful and safe plant operations across all conditions, including reporting of trials.
• Ability to work as part of a team and to work independently.
• Work flexibly in terms of working patterns, location, and reporting lines, to ensure that the plant is adequately manned at all times, including being on call.
• Work innovatively to provide solutions to particular challenges.
• Organise, monitor and report the work activities of others.
• Fully understand the operation and equipment for the Biochar process.
• Accurately report any records requested by the Site Manager or Maintenance Supervisor.
• Willingness to undertake training to ensure safe operation of equipment (e. g. forklift, telehandler, compressed gases, Co SHH, pressure systems, COMPEX and/or obtain statutory certificates).
• Ability to use mobile plant (especially forklifts, telehandler, MEWPS).
• Willingness to provide training to new/junior employees to ensure safe operations.
• Significant experience in a related industry (5 years) (i. e. waste, energy-from-waste, or process environments).
• Significant experience of leading teams.
• IT skills (especially MS Office, and ideally SCADA and/or DCS systems).
• Numeracy (strong mathematics).
• Excellent communicational skills required at all levels; both verbally and written.
• Literacy (expert report compilation).
• Ideally, Process, Electrical, Instrumentation/Controls or Mechanical qualifications or previous experience of a technical role.
• Experience in successfully managing a team, including performance and conduct.
• Adequate knowledge of business and management principles including budgeting, strategic planning, resource allocation and human resources.
• Ability to resolve conflicts.
• Ability to provide creative solutions to ensure continued plant operation.
• Ability to create accountability and to lead by example.
• Mobile plant licences (especially forklifts, telehandler, MEWPS).
