Role Overview
As an Assistant Estimator, you will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive cost submissions for refurbishment roofing projects. Working with senior estimators, clients, suppliers, and internal teams, you will contribute to tender preparation, assist with pricing, and help ensure high‑quality and timely submissions. This role is ideal for someone with early estimating experience or a strong construction or roofing background looking to progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Estimating and Tender Support
- Assist in preparing cost estimates for pitched and flat roofing projects
- Support the review of tender documents and project scope
- Attend site visits with senior colleagues to collect technical information
- Help prepare bills of quantities, schedules of rates, and material take‑offs
- Support tender follow‑ups and client communication
- Assist with solar estimating where required
- Client and Supplier Engagement
- Gather pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturers
- Support cost comparisons and negotiation activities
- Provide basic technical information on roofing systems
- Help maintain strong client and supplier relationships
- Technical Knowledge
- Developing understanding of flat and pitched roofing systems and materials
- Interest in new roofing technologies and best practice
- Awareness of frameworks, funding routes, and portal submissions (training provided)
- Knowledge of PAS2030 and solar installations is an advantage but not essential
- Team Collaboration
- Work closely with Estimators and Operations Managers to meet tender deadlines
- Support team processes and contribute to internal standards
- Help ensure estimates align with commercial and profitability targets
- Use estimating and ERP software; training provided on Swiftest
- Project Support
- Provide updated costing information to Project and Contracts Managers
- Support post‑tender reviews to improve future submissions
Key Skills and Experience
Qualifications
- Construction or roofing‑related qualification (NVQ, HNC, HND) preferred
- CSCS card beneficial
Experience
- Experience within roofing, construction or in an estimating support role
- Understanding of refurbishment, pitched or flat roofing projects
- Confident engaging with suppliers and clients
Skills
- Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy
- Clear communicator with good negotiation skills
- IT‑proficient; estimating software experience beneficial
- Willingness to learn, develop, and progress within estimating
