R&D Scientist – Carbon and Graphene Technology & Prototyping
Location: Manchester, UK (Remote initially – location based post see round)

9N Limited is pioneering the future of sustainable carbon-based materials and graphene — transforming non-recyclable plastics into advanced materials for electronics, energy, defense, and space-tech.
We are looking for a R&D Scientist in Carbon and Graphene Technology & Prototyping to join our core technology team. In this role, you’ll contribute to scaling our patented graphene production technology, support the design and evaluation of prototyping setups, and help define the technical path to commercial manufacturing. You’ll also help maintain a live technical data room, keep the team up to date with emerging developments in advanced materials, and collaborate closely with external partners on MVP development and validation.
Your Role
- Analyse and recommend equipment, lab configurations, and prototyping requirements for converting plastic waste into graphene
- Conduct hands-on graphene R&D
- Perform material characterization using tools like Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM
- Track emerging technologies, production methods, and applications in graphene and 2D materials
- Build and manage a technical data room to support grant applications, IP filings, and investor due diligence
- Work closely with external labs, academic institutions, and technology partners to support MVP development and trials
- Document experimental procedures and ensure safety and compliance within the lab
Who You Might Be

You might be:
- A PhD student or recent graduate in Materials Science, Physics, Nanotechnology, or Chemical Engineering
- A postdoc or research assistant ready to make a commercial impact
- A process engineer or applied physicist with hands-on experience in lab environments and prototyping
Requirements
- MSc, MEng, or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Nanotech
- Practical experience with carbon black, graphene or other 3D/2D materials
- Understanding of prototyping, lab-scale equipment, and/or materials selection/processing
- Familiarity with technical documentation and data analysis
- Must have the right to work in the UK
- Preferably based in Greater Manchester
