What you’ll work on:
- You will be a manager of a cross-functional DDEP (Data, Design, Engineering & Product) team as well as a line manager of highly skilled, passionate, dedicated and ambitious software engineers.
- You will be accountable for workflow optimisation, fostering technical excellence and driving an ambitious and innovative team towards the creation of customer and engineering value.
- You will collaborate with engineering leadership to design the organisation, hire and foster growth, and create an environment where our engineering org can thrive.
- As a leader within our engineering team, you will understand the company strategy and business goals, communicating this to both your reports and the cross-functional team you manage.
- You will use insights and data to make informed decisions that drive effectiveness and efficiency, including driving technical innovation (e.g. using genAI to maximise engineer effectiveness).

- Lead, form and develop a highly performing, highly autonomous cross-functional team.
- Create and maintain an efficient, impactful engineering delivery chain.
- Build a culture of continuous improvement, focusing on customer impact, whilst balancing tech debt repayment, documentation and engineering best practice.
- Lead a culture of experimental innovation within a cross-functional team, both through mentorship and technical leadership.
- Utilise your technical expertise to set teams up for success, delivering high product velocity, technical derisking and navigating challenges.
- Guide the technical strategy of autonomous teams, enabling fast and effective technical decisions through facilitation, technical knowledge and feedback on technical planning, design, system architecture and risk management.
- Contribute to product strategy, setting project goals.
- Develop relationships across product, engineering, design and data science, as well as key business stakeholders across 9fin.
- Cultivate a culture of continuous development of software engineers at 9fin, whilst maintaining work-life balance and a friendly, kind work environment.
- Line management, coaching and mentoring of direct reports through regular 1-1s, goal setting and feedback.
- Partner with the people team to design and implement hiring strategies to attract top talent, leading initiatives to enhance 9fin’s employer brand in tech markets.
Our Stack:
- Typed Python is the dominant backend language used for fastAPI web applications, data & AI workloads.
- React 19 with Vite, Zustand with storybook and playwright for component and e2e testing.
- Paved road IAC infrastructure capabilities for the basis for our cross-team developer platform to enable fast prototyping and security best practices.
- Relational Databases (PostgreSQL) at the heart of the majority of services but we also use elastic search, OLAP data warehouses and data lakes to power our various data-heavy workloads.
- We’re AWS for Cloud hosted services.
- Heavy use of AWS lambda Serverless.
- Docker (AWS ECS) for uniform development/deployment from multiple environments.
About You:
This role will be a great fit if you:
- Have a deep technical background in a core vertical including full-stack web development, modern system architecture patterns, cloud engineering or any combination through past experience or prior to transitioning to management.
- Experience in leading the successful fast-paced and iterative delivery of multiple projects, coordinating across multiple teams/functions and both internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience managing performance of teams and individuals with good feedback practices, conflict management skills and the ability to.
- A high personal bar for quality, and the ability to influence high standards onto others.
- Comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy and technical complexity.
- Enjoy speaking directly with real customers to understand their product needs and to positively showcase your team's work.
