My client is a growing consulting client looking for a data visualisation lead. We are seeking a Principal Data Visualisation Lead with exceptional design thinking capabilities and strategic vision to transform how data insights are communicated and consumed across our organisation and client projects. This role is ideal for a creative technical leader who combines deep expertise in data visualisation, user experience design, and analytics storytelling with the ability to drive visual data strategy and lead cross-functional design initiatives. The ideal candidate will revolutionise data communication by architecting compelling visual narratives, establishing Next Practice for data visualisation standards, and creating innovative dashboard solutions that transform complex data into actionable business intelligence. This is a high-impact role that requires both creative excellence and strategic leadership to shape the future of data storytelling within our company and establish new benchmarks for visual analytics in the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Visual Strategy & Design Leadership: Lead the development of comprehensive data visualisation capabilities that align with business objectives and enhance decision-making capabilities. Establish design standards, visual identity frameworks, and Next Practice methodologies for data presentation across all client engagements. Define and implement visual analytics roadmaps that drive organisational data literacy.
  • Advanced Visualisation Development: Design and develop sophisticated interactive dashboards, executive reporting solutions, and real-time analytics platforms using cutting-edge visualisation technologies. Drive innovation in visual storytelling techniques, immersive data experiences, and emerging visualisation paradigms including AR/VR data environments.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Act as the primary interface between technical data teams and business stakeholders, translating complex analytical findings into compelling visual narratives. Lead executive presentations, design workshops, and strategic visualisation reviews. Ensure all visual outputs effectively communicate insights to diverse audiences from technical teams to C-suite executives.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Standards: Collaborate closely with domain experts and wider data team to integrate visualisation requirements into the broader data architecture. Establish design systems, colour palettes, and accessibility standards that ensure consistency and usability across all visual data products. Drive adoption of visualisation best practices across all pillars.
  • Innovation & User Experience: Stay at the forefront of visualisation research, emerging design trends, and new technologies in the data presentation space. Lead user research initiatives to understand stakeholder needs and optimise visual interfaces for maximum impact. Drive proof-of-concept projects exploring cutting-edge visualisation techniques and interactive data experiences.

Key Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency in modern data visualisation platforms (e.g. Power BI, Looker) and also using AI tools and D3.js. Strong programming skills in relevant languages (Python, DAX, SQL) with experience in data manipulation and statistical analysis. Solid understanding of data architecture principles and cloud-based analytics platforms. Knowledge of web technologies (HTML, CSS, React/Vue) for custom visualisation development.
  • Design & User Experience: Exceptional visual design skills with deep understanding of colour theory, typography, and information design principles. Strong grasp of accessibility standards (WCAG) and responsive design for multi-device deployment. Experience conducting user research, usability testing, and iterative design processes.
  • Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to translate business requirements into compelling visual data strategies. Experience establishing design systems, style guides, and organisational standards. Track record of leading cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder expectations. Strong project management skills with ability to balance multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional presentation skills with ability to communicate complex insights to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience facilitating workshops, design thinking sessions, and stakeholder alignment meetings. Strong written communication skills for creating documentation, proposals, and strategic recommendations. Cultural awareness and adaptability for working with diverse client organisations.
  • Innovation & Continuous Learning: Active engagement with emerging technologies in data visualisation and immersive analytics. Understanding of AI/ML applications in automated insight generation and visual analytics. Experience with proof-of-concept development and technology evaluation. Strong analytical thinking with ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation.
