Unix/Linux Systems Administrator (Solaris Specialist)

We are seeking an experienced Unix/Linux Systems Administrator with strong Solaris expertise to join our team in Barrow-in-Furness. This is a site-based role, 5 days per week, working on critical defence and engineering programmes.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a secure and technically challenging environment, where your skills will directly support vital national infrastructure.

The Role

As a Systems Administrator, you will:

  • Provide support and administration of Unix/Linux environments, with a strong focus on Solaris 10 & 11 (experience with Solaris 8/9 is highly desirable).

  • Manage system performance, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting.

  • Develop and maintain automation scripts (Bash, Python, etc.) to improve efficiency and streamline operations.

  • Support project delivery teams with technical expertise and system configuration.

  • Ensure systems remain secure, stable, and compliant with security standards.

About You

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Proven experience in Unix/Linux administration within enterprise environments.

  • Strong knowledge of Solaris 10 & 11 (with Solaris 8/9 experience a bonus).

  • Scripting skills in Bash, Python, or other relevant languages.

  • A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

  • The ability to work independently in a highly regulated and secure environment.

Security & Eligibility

  • This role requires sole UK nationals only (dual nationals cannot be considered).

  • You must be eligible for SC clearance (existing SC or DV clearance highly advantageous).

  • Due to the nature of the work, the position is 100% site-based in Barrow-in-Furness.
