The opportunity
An established, owner-led business is seeking an experienced AI & Automation Consultant / Engineer to identify and implement practical ways to improve how the organisation operates.
The aim is to remove repetitive, time-consuming tasks, free up capacity and enable people to focus on higher-value work. The remit spans the business, including opportunities to improve internal operations and client delivery.
This is a hands-on role covering discovery, recommendations, development, production deployment and adoption. You will need to understand what the business wants to achieve, identify worthwhile opportunities and take ownership of delivering working solutions.
What you will do
- Work directly with the owners and colleagues across the business to understand objectives, processes and operational challenges.
- Identify opportunities for AI and automation, balancing early quick wins with more substantial improvements.
- Build a prioritised delivery roadmap, explaining expected benefits, implementation effort, costs and dependencies.
- Recommend appropriate approaches, using existing tools, additional platforms, integrations or custom development as required.
- Personally build, test, integrate and deploy reliable solutions into live production.
- Assess the systems, data access and security requirements relevant to each solution.
- Work with the existing technical team, drawing on support while leading delivery independently.
- Help colleagues adopt new ways of working through practical training, documentation and support.
- Measure results, including time saved, reduced manual effort and capacity released.
- Ensure solutions can be maintained and supported after implementation.
The business already uses Claude and ChatGPT business subscriptions. You will have flexibility to recommend other technologies within agreed company parameters.
What you will bring
- A demonstrable track record of helping organisations improve business processes through AI and automation.
- Strong hands-on engineering capability, with experience taking solutions from an initial idea into live production.
- The ability to investigate unfamiliar systems and select an approach that fits the business.
- Confidence working directly with owners and senior stakeholders, translating business needs into practical technical solutions.
- Commercial judgement: the ability to explain where investment will deliver worthwhile returns.
- A proactive approach, with the confidence to propose a direction and take responsibility for delivery.
- Experience supporting user adoption, documenting solutions and handing over effectively.
Experience working with smaller, owner-operated businesses would be particularly helpful.
What success looks like
Early success will include a clear understanding of business priorities, a credible roadmap and quick wins delivering tangible benefits. Over time, success means reliable solutions in everyday use, measurable time savings and more capacity for higher-value work.
Interview approach
Candidates should be ready to discuss previous implementations and the results achieved. Demonstrations, case studies and client references are all welcome.
The interview will also be an opportunity to learn what the organisation is trying to achieve, explore its challenges and explain how you would approach discovery, prioritisation and delivery. We are looking for someone who asks useful questions and shapes the work proactively.
