Overview

The Director, EHS&S Standards & Management Systems is an enterprise-level owner responsible for the EHS&S management system architecture, standards hierarchy, and governance to ensure consistent, risk-based EHS&S performance across De Puy Synthes businesses, regions, and external supply partners.

This role defines how EHS&S is governed and assured, translating global requirements into scalable, auditable standards and establishing enterprise governance for data, analytics, and reporting to enable executive decision-making and risk visibility.

The position reports to the Global Head of EHS&S and collaborates with regional EHS&S leaders and senior leaders across the business.

Global process owners for Assurance/Strategy/Standards/Operational Effectiveness and EHS&S Insights & Analytics fall under this role’s leadership.

Responsibilities

• Enterprise ownership and governance of the EHS&S Management

System: establish and maintain policy, standards hierarchy, governance model, document architecture, and operating cadence across regions and businesses (20%).

• Enterprise governance of EHS&S digital systems and Saa S: oversee incident management, audit/assurance tools, regulatory tracking, and performance reporting with standardization, data governance, cybersecurity/controls alignment, and analytics strategy (20%).
• Set, approve, and evolve global EHS&S standards: develop and maintain global standards aligned to legal, regulatory, and recognized management system requirements; ensure they are risk-based, scalable, and auditable (10%).
• Serve as the enterprise interpretive authority and deviation approver: provide final interpretation of standards and approve/deny risk-based deviations and alternative controls (10%).
• Define the enterprise assurance and audit framework: establish audit strategy, assurance protocols, independence, and escalation for systemic issues and repeated nonconformance (10%).
• Lead and develop the global EHS&S Standards and Management Systems team: direct management of global process owners and coordination with digital/assurance contractors (10%).
• Establish enterprise KPIs and governance reviews: define effectiveness measures, lead governance forums, and drive corrective actions for systemic weaknesses (5%).
• Embed EHS&S governance into enterprise processes: integrate into quality systems, project governance, change management, and supplier oversight (5%).
• Anticipate external trends and evolve standards: monitor regulatory and sustainability trends and translate into updates before risks materialize (5%).
• Participate in enterprise risk reviews, regulatory readiness, and external benchmarking as governance lead (5%).
• Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental, engineering, or related discipline.
• Typically 10–12+ years of progressive EHS&S and/or governance experience in global, multi-site or regulated environments, with enterprise-level governance/standards authority and cross-domain integration.
• Enterprise-level knowledge of global EHS&S legislation and management system expectations; ability to translate requirements into scalable enterprise standards and controls.
• Ability to resolve ambiguous, systemic, enterprise-level problems through governance mechanisms; executive-level influence across functions and regions.
• Deep knowledge of ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001.
• Travel
• Travel up to 20% (Domestic and International).
• Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability, or related field; or professional certification (e. g., CSP, CMIOSH, NEBOSH, ISO Lead Auditor).
• Experience in Med Tech, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated manufacturing contexts.
• Working Relationships
• Internal: Global EHSS leadership, Quality, Risk, Legal, Internal Audit, Operations, Supply Chain.
• External: Regulatory bodies, auditors, standards organizations; represent EHS&S standards and management system authority as required.

• Indirect Reports: Enterprise-wide influence across regions and sites.
