Overview

ELIXIR is a pan‑European distributed research infrastructure for life‑science data, built on people, trust and collaboration.

The organization seeks an exceptional leader to guide ELIXIR through its next phase of development and to shape the future of life‑science data infrastructure in Europe.

The ELIXIR Director reports to the ELIXIR Board and delivers the organization’s mission, strategy and objectives in partnership with governance bodies, Nodes and the broader stakeholder community.

The role requires a life‑sciences specialist with practical experience in bioinformatics and a deep understanding of the needs of bioscience data users in academia and industry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for ELIXIR and lead the ELIXIR Hub.
  • Deliver ELIXIR’s mission, strategy and objectives through partnership with ELIXIR’s governance bodies, Nodes and other stakeholders.
  • Articulate a clear and compelling vision for ELIXIR and inspire staff, Member States, national Nodes, researchers, service providers, funders, industry partners and users across Europe to work collectively towards shared goals.
  • Build trust, foster collaboration and drive alignment across autonomous organizations within a federated and distributed governance model.
  • Lead through influence, partnership and consensus‑building rather than direct managerial authority.
  • Communicate the excitement and impact of complex scientific projects to a wide range of stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading at a multinational level and engaging with international institutions and funding agencies.
  • Awareness of sensitivities when operating across countries and scientific disciplines.
  • Strong ability to set a long‑term vision and determine the means to achieve it.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics and an awareness of the needs of bioscience data users.
  • Experience working in distributed, federated governance structures.
