Job Purpose
Carrying out specialist and technically based operations of vehicle maintenance that require a high degree of skill, technical knowledge and experience. There is a requirement for the above discipline to uphold the statutory obligations in maintaining the Council's Fleet Operators O License. To undertake aspects of manual/supervisory and driving work for a range of Streetscene services.
Principal Accountabilities
- The post holder will be required to maintain, service and repair all Council vehicles, plant and equipment in accordance with relevant legislation and Council policies.
- To follow verbal and written instructions, complete daily schedules and use appropriate mobile communication and IT support systems where applicable.
- To have responsibility for planning, checking and supervising other Streetscene colleagues on the full range of Streetscene services to ensure required standards of work are achieved.
- Have responsibility for the safe operation of daily work programmes ensuring compliance with procedures and instructions given in relation to Health & Safety legislation and policies, to ensure the personal safety of the people under the control of the post and the safety of others.
- The post holder will be expected to carry out manual/supervisory work inclusive of HGV driving duties and other designated specialist vehicles and the operation of specialist equipment for any of the Streetscene service areas to which they have been allocated.
- The post holder will be expected to carry out general operational duties in the following work areas: Winter Maintenance and HGV driving duties in any of the service areas.
- The post holder will be responsible for operations and will have a good standard of practical knowledge and skill to operate a wide range of HGV, large/small plant and machinery and relate these to the health and safety of the public and colleagues.
Supervision/Management of People
To oversee other staff carrying out the duties, ensuring the work is carried out safely and within the standards expected for the service.
Special Working Conditions
This role involves working outdoors in inclement weather for a portion of working time. This role involves driving regularly and a full driving license is required along with access to a vehicle.

The post holder will need to be a qualified, time served and experienced craft operative. As such they must have a wide range of knowledge on maintenance issues relating to specialist vehicles and plant including:
- Welding, fabrication, auto-electrics, hydraulic repairs, pneumatic repairs, diagnostics and MOT preparation.
Knowledge and Experience
A good standard of practical knowledge and skill to operate a wide range of HGV, large/small plant and machinery and relate these to the health and safety of the public and their colleagues. HGV driving includes precision driving of large vehicles in difficult and dangerous circumstances. The work requires a high degree of knowledge in order both to prioritise operations and to ensure roads are kept clear and safe for the public to use. The post holder will have undertaken relevant training in aspects of Streetscene and will be competent in understanding instructions and specifications and be able to convey these to other Streetscene Operatives.
