Job Title: Food Safety Consultant / Environmental Health Officer (EHO) Location: Liverpool, L2 2BS Rate: £50HR Umbrella Contract: Full-time, 6–12 Month Ongoing contract About the Role We are seeking an experienced Food Safety Consultant / Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to join a dynamic Public Protection team within a local authority. You will play a vital role in protecting public health by carrying out enforcement, inspections, investigations, and providing specialist technical advice on food hygiene, health & safety, and public health legislation. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive, qualified professional who thrives in a fast-paced regulatory environment and has a strong understanding of the legal framework governing food safety and environmental health. Key Responsibilities Undertake routine food hygiene, public health, and health & safety inspections across a wide range of commercial premises. Investigate food poisoning outbreaks, infectious disease cases, and serious/fatal accidents. Enforce compliance through formal and informal action, including: Hygiene emergency prohibition notices Improvement and prohibition notices Warning letters, inspection reports, and prosecution case files Conduct food, water, and environmental sampling. Respond to service requests and complaints relating to drainage, waste, and public health nuisances. Lead or support in cases involving exhumations, skin piercing bylaw enforcement, and high-risk interventions. Attend court proceedings, including Magistrates’, Crown, and Coroners’ Court, and give evidence where required. Mentor and support newly qualified officers and contribute to cross-team training. Liaise with key stakeholders such as the UKHSA, HSE, FSA, Police, and Coroners. Analyse technical data and sampling results to advise on corrective action and enforcement strategy. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with GDPR and local authority policy. Contribute to FOI responses and public service transparency (e.g., Have Your Say requests). Maintain professional development as per the Food Standards Agency’s Code of Practice and Competency Framework. Candidate Requirements Essential: Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent. Registration with EHRB, CIEH, or REHIS. Proven experience in food hygiene, health & safety enforcement, and accident/incident investigation. Knowledge of PACE and local authority enforcement procedures. Strong communication and report writing skills with an ability to influence and advise a range of stakeholders. Desirable: Experience mentoring junior officers or contributing to policy development. Familiarity with local authority systems and data handling processes.
