We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Data Protection Officer (DPO) to provide independent oversight of the Council's compliance with data protection legislation and information governance requirements. Reporting to the Assistant Director Governance, the successful candidate will act as the Council's designated Data Protection Officer in accordance with UK GDPR requirements, providing expert advice across the organisation, monitoring compliance, and serving as the principal point of contact with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The role will also support and oversee the Council's Freedom of Information (FOI) function.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the Council's designated Data Protection Officer in accordance with Articles 37-39 of the UK GDPR.
- Provide independent, expert advice to elected Members, senior management, and officers on data protection and privacy obligations.
- Monitor organisational compliance through policies, procedures, training programmes, audits, and assurance reporting.
- Oversee Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and ensure they are conducted appropriately.
- Develop and deliver training on data protection and privacy matters.
- Maintain records of processing activities and ensure they are up to date.
- Respond to data subject access requests and other inquiries related to data protection.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure data protection is embedded in all processes.
