*Role Purpose*
To inspect, service, maintain, diagnose and repair Company fleet and customer vehicles to a consistently high standard. The postholder will help ensure that vehicles are safe, reliable, compliant and available for operation, completing all work in accordance with manufacturer guidance, Company procedures and applicable DVSA and health and safety requirements.
*Role Scope and Contribution*
This is a hands-on technical role with responsibility for supporting the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the Company’s fleet and customer vehicles. The postholder will manage allocated work from initial inspection and diagnosis through to repair, quality checking and completion of records. They will be expected to balance safety, quality, cost and operational priorities, escalating decisions that fall outside their competence or delegated authority. The role contributes directly to vehicle availability, customer service, regulatory compliance and the reputation of the Company.
*Key Working Relationships*
The postholder will work closely with the Workshop Manager, other technicians, apprentices, drivers, transport and operational teams, parts suppliers, customers and external service providers. Effective communication is essential to agree priorities, explain defects and repair requirements, confirm vehicle readiness and minimise avoidable downtime.
*Key Responsibilities*
· Complete planned inspections, servicing and maintenance activities in line with the workshop schedule, including MOT preparation, LOLER-related checks where applicable, safety inspections and routine servicing.
· Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults accurately using appropriate inspection methods, diagnostic equipment and technical information.
· Record, report and clearly communicate all identified defects, including any safety-critical issues, recurring faults or work requiring further authorisation.
· Carry out preventative maintenance to improve vehicle reliability, reduce avoidable downtime and support effective whole-life fleet management.
· Rectify, modify and repair mechanical and electrical faults to a standard that meets or exceeds Company policy, manufacturer guidance and relevant DVSA requirements.
· Attend breakdowns and support vehicle recovery when required, including participation in the out-of-hours and on-call rota.
· Complete tyre inspections, replacement and balancing; record abnormal wear patterns, tread condition and sidewall damage, and escalate concerns where appropriate.
· Undertake welding and minor fabrication work when required, provided the work is within the postholder’s competence and authorisation.
· Use tools, workshop equipment and diagnostic systems safely and correctly, carrying out pre-use checks and reporting defects immediately.
· Complete job cards, inspection sheets, parts records and other workshop documentation accurately and within required timescales.
· Maintain a clean, orderly and safe workshop and workstation, ensuring tools and equipment are returned to their designated storage locations after use.
· Handle oils, batteries, tyres and other waste responsibly, following environmental and hazardous-waste procedures and alerting the Workshop Manager when collection or disposal is required.
· Comply with all Company health and safety procedures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment, safe systems of work and incident-reporting arrangements.
· Work constructively with workshop colleagues, drivers, operational teams, customers and external suppliers to minimise disruption and provide a professional service.
· Support apprentices and less experienced colleagues by sharing technical knowledge and demonstrating safe, effective working practices where appropriate.
· Undertake reasonable additional duties assigned by the Workshop Manager or Directors that are consistent with the nature and level of the role.
*Level-Specific ExpectationsLevel 2 Vehicle Technician*
A Level 2 Technician will undertake routine servicing, inspections, component replacement and defined repairs within their training and experience. They will work from established procedures, identify and report defects accurately, and seek guidance on complex diagnosis, safety-critical repairs or unfamiliar systems. The role requires dependable workmanship, effective use of technical information and a clear commitment to developing broader diagnostic capability.
*Level 3 Vehicle Technician*
A Level 3 Technician will possess broader technical knowledge and will be expected to diagnose and rectify more complex mechanical and electrical faults with a higher degree of independence. They may provide technical guidance to colleagues, support difficult fault-finding activity, assist with quality checks and contribute to improvements in workshop methods. They must recognise the limits of their authority and escalate significant safety, compliance or cost matters to the Workshop Manager.
*Qualifications, Experience and Skills Essential Criteria*
· Recognised vehicle maintenance and repair qualification at Level 2 or Level 3, or an equivalent relevant qualification.
· Relevant practical workshop experience: normally at least two years for a Level 2 technician and three years for a Level 3 technician.
· Full UK driving licence appropriate to the vehicles that may be driven as part of the role.
· Sound knowledge of vehicle mechanical and electrical systems, routine servicing, fault diagnosis and defect rectification.
· Ability to interpret technical information, inspection criteria, job instructions and manufacturer guidance.
· Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work safely with limited supervision.
· Good organisation and housekeeping standards, with careful attention to detail.
· Clear verbal and written communication skills, including accurate completion of workshop records.
· Basic IT literacy and confidence using workshop, fleet-management or diagnostic systems.
· Commitment to safe working, environmental responsibility and continuous professional development.
*Desirable Criteria*
· Vehicle inspection training or an equivalent inspection qualification.
· LOLER awareness or relevant training for equipment used within the fleet.
· Experience working on non commercial and commercial vehicles, specialist equipment or a mixed fleet.
· Relevant welding or fabrication competence.
· Experience of roadside diagnosis, breakdown response or vehicle recovery.
*Role Expectations*
The postholder is expected to maintain professional standards at all times, protect Company and customer property, use parts and resources responsibly, and promptly escalate any matter that may affect safety, compliance, cost or operational availability. Training will be provided on Company-specific equipment and workshop systems as required.
*Accountability and Decision-Making*
The postholder is accountable for the quality and completeness of their own work, the accuracy of inspection and maintenance records, and the safe use of tools, equipment and parts. Work must not be released as complete until required checks have been undertaken. Safety-critical defects, repeat failures, unexpected additional work, significant parts expenditure, missed maintenance deadlines and any concern about legal compliance must be reported promptly to the Workshop Manager. The postholder must not undertake work for which they are not trained, competent or authorised.
*Performance Standards*
Performance will be assessed against safe working practices, quality and first-time effectiveness of repairs, accuracy and timeliness of records, completion of scheduled work, contribution to vehicle availability, responsible use of parts and resources, workshop housekeeping, teamwork, customer service and participation in required training. Any targets will be communicated by the Workshop Manager and applied with regard to safety, job complexity and operational circumstances.
*Working Environment and Physical Requirements*
The role is primarily workshop-based but may require work outdoors, at operating centres, at customer premises or at roadside locations. Duties may involve standing for extended periods, working beneath or around vehicles, manual handling, use of powered tools and exposure to noise, dirt, oils and changing weather conditions. Appropriate risk controls, lifting equipment and personal protective equipment must be used at all times. The postholder must inform the Company of any matter that may affect their ability to carry out the role safely so that appropriate support can be considered.
*Behavioural Competencies*
· *Technical confidence and judgement:* Applies knowledge and experience calmly, makes sound decisions within the limits of authority and seeks support when a task falls outside personal competence.
· *Quality and accountability:* Takes ownership of work, checks repairs and records carefully, meets agreed standards and acts promptly to correct errors or emerging issues.
· *Enthusiasm and continuous improvement:* Approaches tasks positively, remains motivated during demanding periods and looks for practical ways to improve safety, quality and efficiency.
· *Effective communication:* Provides clear, accurate and timely information; explains technical issues in plain language; listens to others; and maintains professional written records.
· *Personal effectiveness:* Plans and prioritises workload, adapts to changing operational requirements, responds constructively to feedback and takes responsibility for ongoing development.
· *Collaborative working:* Builds respectful relationships, shares knowledge, supports colleagues and works with others to achieve safe and reliable outcomes.
· *Equality, diversity and respect:* Treats colleagues, customers and stakeholders fairly and with dignity, values different perspectives and supports an inclusive working environment.
*General Provisions*
This job description describes the principal responsibilities of the role and is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Duties may be reasonably amended to reflect operational requirements, technological developments, changes in legislation or the postholder’s skills and experience.
