Consultant Psychiatrist - Coral Ward

The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in male PICU. The postholder will have Consultant responsibility for Coral Ward, a 12-bed male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at Highgate Mental Health Centre, Dartmouth Park Hill, London, N19 5NX. This is a fixed term position. It is for 10 Programmed Activities: 7.5 Direct Clinical Care and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities. All programmed activities will be based on Coral Ward. It forms part of a well-established hospital inpatient service based at the Highgate Mental Health Centre. This post has arisen due to the previous post-holder taking on management responsibilities within the Trust. The role of the Consultant is to be the clinical lead for the team and to ensure high quality, patient-centered care is delivered by the team. The post-holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the Coral Ward multidisciplinary team. With the ward manager, they will be expected to ensure systems of clinical governance are in place so that high quality, safe and effective care is delivered for the patients under their care. As a senior clinician, they will have an integral role in the performance of the team, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities within the acute service division. It is expected that they will see patients flexibly throughout the week as needed, but at a minimum once per week. In order to meet the needs of the Trust, you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that falls under Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey or Islington. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis. Coral ward falls within the Hospital Services division. The ward is a 12-bed male PICU at the Highgate Mental Health Centre. Patients admitted to the ward are usually subject to a “gate-keeping” assessment by the Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team. Admissions come from community teams, the Place of Safety, EDs and police custody. In addition, the ward accepts around 8 patients annually from prisons under section 48/49 or 47/49 MHA. These patients transferred from prison have been assessed as low risk towards others. Prisoners presenting a high risk towards others are managed within the forensic pathway. The main purpose of the ward is to ensure the comprehensive, timely and efficient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of all patients with a clear focus on achieving a safe return to treatment in the least-restrictive setting back in the community as quickly as possible. This involves the proactive anticipation, evaluation and resolution of all potential impediments to early discharge of the patient. The ward caters for adults of all ages, including over-65s with functional rather than organic illness and who are not frail-although in practice very few elderly patients need PICU. Specialist liaison advice on elderly patients is provided by the inpatient Old Age Psychiatrists based at HMHC on Pearl ward and Garnet wards, specialist wards for people with dementia or those who are physically frail. #J-18808-Ljbffr
