3Spires Safety is recruiting an HSE Manager for a growing renewable energy and battery storage business operating across the UK and Europe. This is a senior, standalone contract role for someone who can build the HSE framework and own it, acting as the appointed competent person and keeping delivery safe, compliant and risk controlled.
The role
Working closely with operations, projects and commercial teams, you will set the HSE direction across multiple sites. Day to day you will:
- Develop and maintain HSE management systems to ISO 45001 across the UK and Europe, keeping policy aligned with current legislation
- Act as the appointed competent person, advising leadership and escalating intolerable risk, with the authority to stop work where there is credible evidence of imminent danger
- Support project and operational teams on risk assessments, RAMS, safe systems of work and contractor controls, proportionate to the hazards involved
- Run assurance activities such as inspections, audits and performance reviews
- Lead incident and near miss investigations with clear root cause, corrective actions, owners and deadlines
- Maintain emergency arrangements and occupational health controls, and report HSE KPIs to senior management
- Provide HSE input to tenders, change activities and training that strengthens the safety culture
What you will need
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent degree, and Chartered or working towards it (CMIOSH or GradIOSH)
- At least 8 years in HSE, with proven multi‑site leadership in renewables, energy, construction or a comparable industrial setting
- Experience of high‑voltage or electrically connected environments
- Strong working knowledge of UK and EU health and safety legislation, including CDM Regulations
- ISO 45001 implementation and internal or lead auditing experience
- Track record as an appointed competent person, with the judgement to advise and challenge at all levels
- Fluent English, and willing to travel across the UK and Europe as the role requires
Nice to have
- Experience in grid-scale battery storage or renewable generation
- Familiarity with BESS and electrical safety standards (for example IEC 62933, UL 9540)
- A second European language (German or French)
