The Impact You'll Make in this Role
As an Equipment Technician, you will be responsible for specifying, procuring, installing, commissioning, and maintaining laboratory equipment used to test respiratory protective products against applicable European standards. The role includes development and validation of test methods, training laboratory personnel, and ensuring equipment operation complies with the laboratory's ISO 9001 certified quality management system and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.
Main responsibilities will be:
- Review clauses of existing and new EN respiratory product standards to determine equipment requirements.
- Specify suitable laboratory equipment to meet testing requirements.
- Prepare User Requirement Specifications (URS) for complex or high-value equipment purchases.
- Liaise with equipment suppliers and support procurement processes.
- Install and commission new laboratory equipment.
- Verify performance against specifications and standard requirements.
- Document installation and commissioning activities.
- Develop documented test methods to meet relevant EN standard clauses.
- Conduct method validation to demonstrate accuracy, repeatability, and suitability.
- Maintain documentation for validated methods.
- Train laboratory technicians on equipment operation and associated test procedures.
- Prepare operating procedures, work instructions, and training materials.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance.
- Maintain existing laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Develop and manage preventative maintenance schedules.
- Perform calibration activities and coordinate external calibration services.
- Maintain calibration, maintenance, and servicing records.
- Ensure equipment and procedures comply with the ISO 9001 quality management system.
- Support the laboratory's compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.
- Maintain documentation and records in accordance with quality procedures.
- Work collaboratively with laboratory technicians, engineers, and the Quality Manager.
- Communicate effectively regarding equipment status, testing capability, and maintenance activities.
- Contribute to laboratory continuous improvement initiatives.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who meet the following minimum requirements:
- Technical qualification (HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent) in engineering, physics, instrumentation, related discipline or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with laboratory or test equipment.
- Ability to interpret technical standards and specifications.
Preferred qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Experience with respiratory protective equipment testing or related standards.
- Experience in test method development and validation.
- Experience preparing User Requirement Specifications (URS).
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 environments.
