Mechanical Design Engineer required for a leading manufacturing and engineering business in County Derry to join their growing design team. This role offers the chance to work on low-voltage switchgear projects, supporting the delivery of accurate, high-quality mechanical designs while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Design & Project Delivery
    • Create and develop 3D models using Autodesk Inventor
    • Design mechanical arrangements for low-voltage switchgear assemblies
    • Produce manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and release documentation
    • Design components including:
      • Sheet metal parts
      • Frames, doors, covers, gland plates and plinths
      • Busbar supports, brackets, and internal panel layouts
    • Support designs for copperwork, cable access, ventilation, and breaker arrangements
    • Ensure designs are manufacturable, practical, and suitable for assembly
    • Work to project deadlines and communicate updates effectively
  • Design Accuracy & Release Control
    • Maintain accuracy across models, drawings, BOMs, and release packs
    • Check designs against specifications, GA drawings, and standards
    • Participate in internal design reviews prior to manufacture
    • Update designs based on feedback and project changes
    • Follow revision control and release procedures
    • Help reduce errors caused by outdated or incomplete information
  • Manufacturing & Cross-Functional Support
    • Support shop floor teams with design queries during production
    • Resolve fit-up issues, clashes, or missing design data
    • Liaise with Purchasing and Stores on component requirements
    • Communicate design changes to relevant departments
    • Work closely with Electrical Design and Project Management teams
    • Provide technical input and project updates as required
  • Standards & Continuous Improvement
    • Contribute to standardisation of design practices and components
    • Identify improvements to manufacturability and efficiency
    • Feed lessons learned back into future designs
    • Support development of templates, libraries, and design guides
    • Assist with product development, prototypes, and improvements

About You:

  • Essential
    • Experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineering environment
    • Strong 3D CAD skills (preferably Autodesk Inventor)
    • Ability to produce and interpret manufacturing drawings
    • Knowledge of sheet metal design, fabrication, and assembly methods
    • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
    • Good communication and teamwork skills
    • Proactive approach with ownership of assigned work
  • Desirable
    • Experience with Autodesk Vault or similar PDM systems
    • Background in switchgear, electrical enclosures, or similar products
    • Knowledge of copperwork, busbars, and panel construction
    • Experience producing BOMs, DXFs, and release packs
    • Understanding of design for manufacture and assembly
    • Familiarity with electrical drawings and client specifications
