The opportunity
I am working exclusively with a leading UK main contractor to appoint a Commercial Manager into their London and South business unit, based out of the Horsham office with a focus on their South Coast project portfolio. This is a genuine step up role for a senior Quantity Surveyor or an established Commercial Manager who wants ownership of the full commercial function across a varied workload. My client delivers new build, refurbishment and fit out schemes with a strong pipeline in healthcare, alongside education, life sciences and commercial work. Project values sit in the mid to large range, with the successful candidate managing turnover in excess of £10m per annum.
What you will be doing
- Leading all commercial aspects across a portfolio of mid to large new build and refurbishment projects
- Supporting the tendering, preconstruction and work winning process, including preparation of commercial reports
- Driving project commercial start up procedures on new job wins
- Managing procurement of materials, offsite services and subcontract packages in line with company policy and the procurement programme
- Carrying out gap analysis between packages to ensure complete and watertight subcontract procurement
- Preparing inclusive invitations to tender, completing full tender evaluations and making recommendations to award
- Working with the supply chain to drive continuous improvement in cost, quality and shared learning
- Maximising cash flow through timely valuations, applications for payment, invoicing and collection
- Managing the prompt preparation and settlement of final accounts, including variations, claims and disputes
- Identifying, managing and driving out unnecessary cost and inefficient activity
- Producing accurate and timely CVR reports, forecasts and contributing to financial target setting
- Identifying project risk and opportunity early and ensuring both are actively managed
- Planning commercial resource across the projects to meet changing demand
What you will need
- A relevant qualification, typically a degree in Quantity Surveying
- Demonstrable experience with a large UK main contractor across a range of projects
- A background in healthcare new build and refurbishment would be a strong advantage
- Proven experience managing all commercial aspects on schemes turning over in excess of £10m per annum
- Strong working knowledge of NEC forms of contract
- The confidence to operate autonomously and influence at project and regional level
