We are recruiting an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer on behalf of an established Leicester-based manufacturer of specialist, high-precision engineering equipment.

This is a key position within the company's R&D and Engineering function, combining electronics design, firmware, systems engineering and hands-on technical work.

The successful candidate will have strong industrial experience developing electronic control systems for electro-mechanical machinery and will be comfortable working across the complete product lifecycle – from design and development through to testing, manufacture, troubleshooting and long-term product support.

This isn't purely a desk-based design position.

We're looking for an engineer who genuinely enjoys getting hands-on with electronics, solving technical problems and working closely with manufacturing, mechanical and software engineering teams.

  • What You'll Be Doing
  • Supporting the design and manufacture of high-value, customised electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Developing and implementing electronic and firmware solutions.
  • Providing hands-on technical support, fault finding, testing and problem solving.
  • Working closely with Manufacturing and R&D to ensure electronic designs are suitable for external manufacture and assembly.
  • Working alongside mechanical, electronics and software engineers to resolve system-level problems.
  • Supporting products throughout their full lifecycle, from initial development through to long-term in-service support.
  • Circuit design, PCB design and prototyping.
  • Hardware and firmware development for microcontroller-based applications.
  • Supporting applications involving data acquisition, motor control and data communications.
  • Producing and maintaining accurate engineering documentation.
  • Undertaking practical work including cable prototyping, soldering and PCB rework.
  • Supporting colleagues during time-critical engineering challenges.
  • Occasional travel to customer, supplier or other business locations.
  • What You'll Need

Minimum 5 years' industrial experience developing electro-mechanical machinery or equipment.

Strong knowledge of electronic control systems.

Good understanding of mechanical principles and mechanisms.

Strong grounding in analogue and digital electronics within industrial applications.

Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and electronic schematics.

Practical circuit design, PCB design and prototyping experience.

Hardware and firmware development experience for microcontrollers.

Experience with applications such as data acquisition, motor control and data communications.

Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proactive approach with the confidence to take ownership of technical problems.

Comfortable working independently while contributing effectively within a wider engineering team.

Willingness to be hands-on with cable assembly, soldering and PCB rework.

Good understanding of safe working practices within an R&D or engineering environment.

Desirable Experience

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous

  • Altium Designer
  • CE marking and regulatory compliance
  • EMC, LVD and Machinery Directive requirements
  • Solid Works or similar
  • Product development methodologies
  • Full product lifecycle engineering
  • Precision measurement or instrumentation
  • Motor types and associated control systems

Qualifications

HNC, HND or Degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering, or demonstrable equivalent industrial experience.
