Overview
To lead and manage the microbiology laboratory function, ensuring accurate and timely testing of raw materials, environmental samples, work-in-progress products, and finished goods.
The role is responsible for maintaining food safety standards, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with customer, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the microbiology laboratory.
- Lead, coach, and develop laboratory technicians and analysts.
- Ensure microbiological testing is conducted accurately and within agreed turnaround times.
- Maintain laboratory compliance with relevant standards, including ISO 17025, BRCGS, and customer requirements.
- Review, interpret, and communicate microbiological results to support food safety and quality decisions.
- Investigate out-of-specification results, contamination incidents, and customer complaints.
- Oversee environmental monitoring programmes and trend analysis.
- Manage laboratory budgets, equipment calibration, maintenance, and stock control.
- Support internal and external audits and regulatory inspections.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Professional laboratory or food safety qualification desirable.
- Monday to Friday on site 07:00 - 15:30 with some weekend work
