Forklift Instructors Course (ITSSAR Accredited)

Become a qualified forklift truck instructor/examiner in 10 Days. On completion of the course you will understand the principles of forklift truck operation, safety and training. Extensive coverage includes roles of the instructor, learning methods, principles of instruction, lesson types and plans, classroom and training aids, along with assessments and reporting, skills testing and ongoing assessment. Each student must have had an operator\’s certificate issued within 6 months.

Forklift Instructors Course ITSSAR / Forklift Instructors Course

The Forklift Instructor Novice course helps you become a qualified instructor and examiner in just 10 days. You’ll learn the core principles of safe forklift operation and effective training methods.

The course covers your role as an instructor, how people learn, and different ways to teach. You’ll explore how to plan lessons, use training aids, and assess students confidently. You’ll also practise delivering skills tests and giving clear feedback through ongoing assessments.

To take this course, you need at least one year of forklift experience. You must also hold a valid operator’s certificate, issued within the last six months. This ensures your knowledge and skills meet current safety standards.

Forklift Instructors Course Objectives

To train delegates with proven operating ability on specific types of machine in the methods and techniques required for the qualified instruction, training, assessment and certification of lift truck operators, in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the Health & Safety Commission (HSC) Approved Code of Practice and Supplementary Guidance “Rider Operated Lift Trucks – Operator Training” (COP26).

Experience required

Delegates must have at least 12 months of operating experience and must complete a retest within six months before attending the instructor course. They should be able to adapt their teaching style to suit different learning needs. Strong communication skills and the ability to lead and manage a group are also essential.

This is a highly practical course. Delegates are expected to actively participate in all activities, as most of the qualification is awarded based on assessed performance.

Course Duration

10 x days (2 x consecutive weeks, Mon-Fri).

Accreditation, Registration and Certification

Successful delegates are registered and certificated on the ITSSAR National Register of Accredited Instructors (as applicable) and are also entered on the Register of Approved FLT Instructors / Examiners.

Delegate Status

Delegates attending our Forklift Instructor Novice course must already operate the relevant machines confidently and competently. They should also meet recommended medical standards and demonstrate maturity, reliability, and a genuine interest in teaching others. To meet ITSSAR requirements, each delegate must pass a refresher test to national standards within 12 months before starting the course.

Assessments and Monitoring

Delegates are continuously assessed during their training and each course is externally monitored at random by a qualified Training Advisor from ITSSAR.

Course Manuals

Each delegate is provided with a range of operational and instructional manuals. Extra materials required are: Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), Approved Code Of Practice L117 (ACOP L117).

Course Tutors

2 Start Staff Tutors and are accredited by ITSSAR and are also fully experienced, trained, tested and certificated on the relevant machines.

Our Forklift Instructor Novice course is available to be completed at our Portsmouth, Southampton and Reading depots.
