We are sharing a specialised remote consulting opportunity for U.K.-based software engineers with experience in COBOL, software engineering, legacy systems, technical evaluation, code review, and structured engineering problem-solving. This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on AI-assisted software engineering evaluation, high-quality technical training data, COBOL-related engineering tasks, code reasoning, and structured project execution. Selected professionals will translate real-world software engineering expertise into structured examples, review AI-generated technical outputs, and provide detailed feedback based on practical engineering experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • COBOL Engineering Task Creation & Documentation
    • Create structured software engineering tasks involving COBOL, legacy system logic, debugging scenarios, code comprehension, or technical problem-solving.
    • Document engineering workflows, implementation approaches, code reasoning, and expected solution paths clearly.
    • Translate real-world software engineering experience into task-based deliverables, technical examples, and structured evaluation materials.
    • Support work involving legacy codebases, enterprise system logic, data processing workflows, procedural programming, or related software engineering topics depending on project needs.
  • Technical Review & AI Output Evaluation
    • Review and refine AI-generated code, technical explanations, debugging steps, software design suggestions, or COBOL-related engineering outputs.
    • Evaluate outputs for correctness, completeness, maintainability, clarity, and alignment with practical software engineering standards.
    • Identify inaccurate logic, missing edge cases, weak reasoning, unclear implementation steps, or technically incorrect assumptions.
    • Validate content against professional software engineering experience, COBOL knowledge, and real-world development practices.
  • Structured Feedback & Quality Control
    • Provide clear written feedback explaining engineering reasoning, code behavior, technical tradeoffs, and quality concerns.
    • Follow detailed task instructions, review rubrics, quality criteria, and project-specific standards accurately.
    • Review discrete technical deliverables and identify areas for improvement.
    • Collaborate through remote project workflows to improve AI-assisted software engineering outputs and training data quality.

Ideal Profile

  • At least 5 years of full-time software engineering experience.
  • Professional experience working with COBOL in production, enterprise, legacy systems, modernization, maintenance, debugging, or related engineering contexts.
  • Work experience at a large technology company, product-led software company, enterprise software environment, or comparable high-quality engineering organization.
  • Strong ability to reason through code, explain technical decisions, and evaluate engineering outputs clearly.
  • Experience reviewing code, debugging technical issues, documenting implementation logic, or creating engineering tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify incorrect assumptions, incomplete reasoning, code-quality issues, or missing requirements.
  • Comfort reviewing AI-generated software engineering content and applying detailed evaluation criteria.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous, project-based environment.
  • Current U.K. location.

Nice to Have

  • Senior-level experience in software engineering, systems programming, legacy modernization, enterprise applications, financial systems, mainframe environments, or large-scale production systems.
  • Familiarity with COBOL-related tools, mainframe workflows, batch processing, data pipelines, database interactions, or enterprise integration patterns.
  • Experience creating technical documentation, coding assessments, debugging exercises, training materials, or structured engineering evaluation tasks.
  • Experience reviewing AI-generated code, rubric-based technical assessments, code explanations, or software engineering benchmark tasks.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly for both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply COBOL and software engineering expertise to structured remote project work.
  • Contribute to high-quality AI-assisted software engineering evaluation and technical training workflows.
  • Use practical engineering judgment in a focused review and task-creation environment.
