The Machine Learning (ML) / Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer is responsible for leveraging advanced analytics, AI models, and machine learning techniques to optimize car performance, race strategy, and team decision-making. The ideal candidate will combine expertise in data science with a passion for motorsports, helping transform live telemetry, simulation outputs, and historical race data into actionable insights that give our team a competitive edge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, train, and deploy AI/ML models for predicting race outcomes, pit strategy, and competitor behavior.
- Analyze streaming telemetry data from car sensors and in-race events to identify real-time performance optimization opportunities.
- Work with race engineers to integrate ML-driven predictions into simulations for aerodynamics, tire degradation, fuel strategy, and vehicle setup.
- Build race-specific competitor models, including driver performance trends, pit crew efficiency, and team strategy profiles.
- Collaborate with simulation engineers to enhance lap time modeling and optimize vehicle setup through machine learning techniques.
- Ensure ML solutions operate in time-sensitive, low-latency environments suitable for live race deployment, with confidence thresholds and fallback logic.
- Communicate complex data-driven insights in clear, actionable terms to crew chiefs, engineers, and competition leadership.
- Research and prototype new data/ML approaches to expand competitive advantage across simulation, car setup optimization, and race execution.
- Aid other team members as requested by leadership.
- Represent 23XI Racing in a professional manner at all times.
- Other duties as assigned by Manager.
Required Skills, Experience and Abilities
- 5+ years of experience in a Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or related role.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience with ML/AI algorithms (neural networks, reinforcement learning, predictive modeling, Bayesian methods) required.
- Strong coding skills in Python (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and familiarity with MATLAB or R.
- Experience handling large datasets, time-series data, or real-time streaming inputs; proficiency with SQL/NoSQL databases.
- Experience with AWS cloud services strongly desired.
- Experience with vehicle dynamics, motorsports engineering, or performance simulation is preferred.
- Ability to work under the high-pressure environment of competition weekends with strong communication skills to non-technical audiences.
- Must demonstrate personal motivation and enthusiasm; ability to work as an individual and as part of a team.
- Must possess problem solving abilities for complex problem resolution, identifying, and resolving issues effectively.
- Familiarity with NASCAR’s technical and competitive landscape is a strong plus.
