Role Description
The Band Leader is a full-time, on-site role based in Milton Keynes, responsible for leading and developing student bands within 22 Music School’s Amplify Academy and wider programs. Day-to-day tasks include planning and delivering engaging rehearsals, selecting appropriate repertoire, arranging music for different skill levels, and preparing bands for performances, examinations, and showcases. The Band Leader will coach students in ensemble skills, stagecraft, and musical interpretation, while promoting confidence, collaboration, and professional rehearsal habits. The role involves close coordination with other tutors and administrative staff to schedule sessions, track student progress, and communicate with learners and their families. The Band Leader is expected to contribute to workshops, performance events, and curriculum development, supporting the school’s mission to help people discover their potential through music.
Qualifications
- Strong musicianship skills, including proficiency on at least one band instrument (e.g., guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals) and solid understanding of band arrangements and popular music styles.
- Experience leading ensembles or bands, with skills in musical direction, rehearsal planning, and performance preparation for learners at varied levels.
- Demonstrated teaching or coaching ability, ideally in a music school or educational setting, with a learner-centered approach and experience working with children, young people, and adults.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate, give constructive feedback, and create an inclusive, supportive rehearsal environment.
- Organizational and time-management skills, including scheduling rehearsals, coordinating performances, and maintaining accurate records of student progress.
- Familiarity with contemporary music education frameworks, graded examinations (e.g., RSL, Trinity), and live performance practice is highly beneficial.
- Relevant formal training such as a degree or diploma in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, or equivalent experience; teaching qualifications or safeguarding training are advantageous.
