The Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead the engineering and maintenance function at our Gunstones bakery site, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production assets.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll drive engineering excellence, develop a high-performing team, and lead continuous improvement initiatives that directly impact site performance and business success.

Working closely with Production and Operations teams, you'll play a key role in shaping a proactive maintenance culture and improving asset reliability.

Location

Gunstones produces some of the finest hot cross buns, bread rolls, brioche buns and iced buns for some of the nation’s favourite high street retailers including Marks and Spencer, Co-Op, Tesco and Aldi.

We have around 700 colleagues.

The Gunstones family started this business in 1862 and went on to open their first bakery in Sheffield in 1925.

In 1952, they built the factory, which is our current site in Dronfield.

  • What you’ll be doing as an Engineering Manager
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of 17-20 engineers, including Team Leaders and Apprentices.
  • Drive a strong health, safety and compliance culture across all engineering activities.
  • Manage maintenance planning, PPM compliance and continuous improvement of the CMMS system.
  • Analyse downtime, conduct root cause investigations and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Lead engineering projects, asset management plans and site-wide reliability improvements.
  • Manage engineering budgets, contractors, service agreements and key performance indicators.
  • What we are looking for in an Engineering Manager
  • Proven Engineering Manager, Maintenance Manager or engineering leadership experience within FMCG, food manufacturing or high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Strong mechanical or electrical engineering background, ideally with multi-skilled experience.
  • Demonstrable experience leading, developing and engaging engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of CMMS systems, maintenance planning, asset management and reliability engineering.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills with a results-driven approach.
