The Company: You’ll be working in a busy company with local offices and an on-site fabrication workshop in Plymouth. The company provides welding, pipework, and engineering services to local companies, working within various sectors including factories, quarries, mines, and power plants locally. Established for over 10 years, the company has ongoing work and repeat clients.

Role Purpose: Lead the end-to-end delivery of mechanical engineering projects (valued from £1k - £300k), ensuring successful execution from initial planning through to completion. Manage all contractual aspects, proactively mitigating risks, and drive project performance to meet deadlines, quality standards, and budget targets while maintaining full compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

Working Conditions: Full-time position, typically Monday to Friday (8-5pm) but some flexibility may be required for overtime, weekend work, or emergency shifts.

Project Management:

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts related to mechanical engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and company standards.
  • Identify and mitigate contractual risks.
  • Monitor contract performance and enforce terms and conditions.
  • Procurement of relevant plant and materials and sub-contractor packages.
  • Analysis of labour resource requirements for the project and placement and control of labour and associated costs.
  • Regular site visits monitoring works progress and ensuring the quality of work is to the required standard.

Project Coordination and Financial Oversight:

  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and project management teams to align contract terms with project goals.
  • Track project milestones and deliverables in accordance with contractual obligations.
  • Collating certification and preparation of O&M manuals.
  • Support budgeting and cost control efforts.
  • Manage claims, variations, and change orders.

Supervision & Installations:

  • Adhoc site support, supervision of small projects, RAMS, labour control, including some hands-on installation on rare occasions.

Health & Safety Compliance:

  • Ensuring that Risk Assessments and Method Statements are prepared, submitted, authorised, and monitored.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including the proper use of machinery and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Address any potential safety issues and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for all staff with training on safety procedures.

Stakeholder Communication & Reporting:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for contractual matters with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Evaluating customer needs and responding to them.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management.
  • Attending a range of project group and technical meetings.
  • Provide regular updates on project timelines, resource needs, and staffing requirements.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Implement initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance service quality.
  • Encourage innovation and problem-solving within the team.

Essential role related knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience at selection:

  • Relevant qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or a related field are preferred.
  • Proven experience in Contract Management within an engineering or construction environment.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering health and safety protocols and industry-standard quality assurance practices.
  • Detail-focused, with a proven ability to deliver to the highest compliance and technical standards.
  • Working knowledge of contract management software and CAD and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, with a proven capacity to foster strong, collaborative relationships with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS CSCS Card – Managerial/Professionally Qualified.
  • Self-motivated.
