Overview
As Managing Quantity Surveyor you will lead a large commercial team and provide senior commercial management across a portfolio of complex infrastructure projects. You will shape procurement, contract management and governance to ensure value, risk control and delivery clarity throughout the project lifecycle. You’ll act as a senior escalation point on commercial issues and support strategic decisions with robust financial insight. This role offers significant influence over commercial strategy, supplier relationships and professional development within a regulated, capital-intensive environment. Responsibilities
- Lead commercial activities across a portfolio of complex infra projects, covering pre- and post-contract phases
- Maintain contractual compliance with defined processes, controls and escalation
- Develop and advise on procurement and commercial strategies balancing value, risk and delivery
- Manage relationships with contractors and suppliers, including negotiations
- Provide commercial input on variations, claims, disputes and obligations
- Ensure value for money throughout supplier and contract lifecycles
- Oversee payment certification, cost control, forecasting, budgeting and governance
- Provide cost and market data to support estimating and planning
- Produce commercial performance reporting and senior-level insight on risks and opportunities
- Lead, coach and develop a multi-level QS team towards chartership
- Contribute expert input into governance, business cases and strategic decisions
- Support senior commercial leadership with dispute resolution and strategic initiatives
- Act as senior escalation point for commercial/contractual issues and drive corrective action
Key requirements
- Degree or Master’s in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or related discipline
- Extensive QS/Commercial experience in civil engineering or infrastructure
- Proven experience leading a substantial commercial team
- Experience managing a portfolio through pre- and post-contract phases
- Strong contract management, procurement, supplier negotiation and risk management
- Ability to assess contractual risk, supply-chain resilience and make recommendations
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience with budgets, forecasting, cost control and governance
- Experience handling claims, disputes, variations and complex contractual issues
- Chartered status or strong knowledge of RICS principles
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
