Senior Quantity Surveyor
The Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially driven Senior Quantity Surveyor to take a leading role within its Commercial team.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of the commercial performance of a major multi-scheme portfolio, working across street lighting, civil engineering and technology infrastructure projects.
Reporting to the Managing Surveyor, you will be a senior commercial lead responsible for protecting profitability, managing complex contractual risk and ensuring robust financial control across a high-value and technically diverse portfolio.
Alongside project delivery, you will play an important leadership role, providing commercial expertise to senior stakeholders and supporting the development of Assistant and Junior Quantity Surveyors.
This is a senior opportunity offering genuine commercial ownership and influence across a significant infrastructure portfolio. You will work closely with senior business and client stakeholders, take the lead on complex commercial matters and play an important role in developing the next generation of commercial talent.
The role would suit an ambitious Senior Quantity Surveyor looking for greater responsibility, exposure to complex NEC Target Cost contracts, and the opportunity to influence both project performance and the wider commercial function.
The Role
As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will take responsibility for the full commercial lifecycle across a portfolio of major schemes.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing all commercial aspects of a major multi-scheme project portfolio.
- Taking full accountability for accurate financial reporting, cost systems and CVR forecasts.
- Driving commercial performance and identifying opportunities to optimise portfolio profitability.
- Ensuring compliance with complex contract conditions, including NEC3 and NEC4 Target Cost contracts.
- Leading the identification, pricing and management of change control, claims and third-party variations.
- Managing commercial and contractual risk to protect the financial interests of the business.
- Developing and delivering subcontract procurement strategies, including high-value tendering, negotiation and contract placement.
- Managing subcontractor commercial performance and supporting the resolution of disputes.
- Maintaining robust, accurate and audit-ready commercial records and contract documentation.
- Taking ownership of commercial data, risk registers and the successful conclusion of final accounts.
- Negotiating and resolving complex outstanding commercial issues.
- Building strong, strategic relationships with senior client and project stakeholders.
- Providing expert commercial advice and support to business unit leaders and project teams.
- Mentoring and developing Assistant and Junior Quantity Surveyors.
- Line-managing Assistant Quantity Surveyors, including resource allocation, performance management and career development.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong track record of managing complex infrastructure or utilities portfolios.
You will bring:
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience operating at Senior Quantity Surveyor level or equivalent.
- Proven experience managing multiple civil engineering, highways infrastructure or major utilities schemes simultaneously.
- Expert practical knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, particularly Target Cost contracts.
- Strong experience in commercial reporting, CVRs, forecasting and cost management.
- Proven expertise in change management, claims and commercial risk.
- Significant subcontract procurement, negotiation and contract management experience.
- A demonstrable track record of successfully negotiating and concluding complex final accounts.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and senior stakeholder management skills.
- Strong leadership capability, with experience mentoring and developing junior commercial professionals.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a demanding and varied portfolio.
- A valid UK driving licence.
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
- Full professional chartership, such as MRICS or MICES.
- Commercial experience within Highways Electrical, street lighting renewals or signage installations.
