Through our leading brands, trusted for more than 180 years, we provide technology-enabled products, platforms and services that help researchers to uncover new ideas and share their discoveries, health professionals to stay at the forefront of medical science, and educators to advance learning.
About The Brand
Nature Portfolio’s high-quality journals and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences help move science and society forward. Nature Portfolio is home to the leading, international weekly journal of science, Nature – founded in 1869. It is also home to the Nature research and Nature Reviews journals, the leading open access multidisciplinary journal Nature Communications, and open access journals including Scientific Reports.
About the Role
Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team. To help us build on the success of the portfolio, we’re seeking an Editor with a research background in one or more areas of the physical sciences, as well as an interest in working across a broad range of topics, exceptional literary and verbal communication skills, and a keen eye for detail.
As an interim Associate or Senior Editor, you will be part of a large and interdisciplinary team of Cross-Journal Editors that work closely, and flexibly, across the Nature Reviews journals on varied aspects of the editorial process, including editing commissioned content, organizing peer review and writing short articles. The team also produces and coordinates the Research Briefing articles (short, accessible summaries of original research papers), and occasionally edits other news and opinion content, across the Nature Research Journals. This role is offered on a maternity cover basis and can be based in our London or Pune offices on a hybrid working model.
Role responsibilities
- Provide agile support to Nature Reviews journal teams across a variety of editorial tasks, showing strong collaboration, adaptability and resilience, as well as effective time management and organizational skills.
- Commission Perspective and Review articles, as well as assess proposals and submissions, demonstrating scientific comprehension and critical evaluation, the ability to provide constructive feedback, and decision quality.
- Edit Reviews and Perspective articles for clarity, tone and impact, using scientific and academic writing skills.
- Edit Research Briefing articles across diverse topics for the Nature Research Journals, demonstrating the ability to craft accessible audience-appropriate content and the confidence to work on topics outside of your core expertise.
- Strengthen the reputation of the Nature Portfolio in the scientific community by fostering good relationships with researchers, communicating and collaborating effectively.
- Help other members of the team with tasks, and participate in the training and evolution of the team, using interpersonal awareness and collaboration.
- Contribute to discussion on publishing workflows and systems to help ensure continued operational excellence.
- Develop and maintain effective and productive relations with other members of staff, including other Nature Portfolio journal editors, and other relevant departments, such as production.
Experience, Skills, & Qualifications
- Essential: Higher (graduate) degree, preferably to PhD level, in a physical sciences discipline relevant to one or more of the Nature Reviews journals.
- A passion for science and a thirst to learn more.
- Broad interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
Desirable
- Research experience strongly preferred but not required.
- Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for Senior Editor positions.
