The Opportunity

We are working with a rapidly growing MEP contractor based in Central London who are looking to appoint an experienced MEP Design Manager to join their team. The business has experienced significant growth over the last two years, having doubled its headcount during this period and continuing to secure a strong pipeline of work. They are now looking for an MEP Design Manager who can operate confidently across both design and delivery, working closely with clients, consultants, subcontractors and internal project teams. The role will cover a range of residential and commercial projects, with the successful candidate taking ownership of the design process and ensuring projects move efficiently from design through to construction.

The Role

As MEP Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the design process across a number of projects, ensuring designs are technically robust, coordinated and suitable for construction. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the MEP design process from initial stages through to construction and delivery.
  • Reviewing and validating designs produced by external consultants, ensuring they are compliant, coordinated and buildable.
  • Managing internal and external MEP design teams across mechanical, electrical and public health disciplines.
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications, calculations and technical submissions, identifying design gaps, clashes and discrepancies.
  • Working closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers and site teams to ensure design information supports delivery.
  • Leading and chairing MEP design meetings with consultants, clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders.
  • Managing design programmes, deliverables and technical approvals.
  • Supporting procurement and construction teams with technical and design requirements.
  • Providing technical support during construction and assisting with design-related queries from site.
  • Monitoring design changes and assessing their impact on programme, cost and buildability.
  • Maintaining effective communication between design, commercial and construction teams.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered in accordance with relevant standards, specifications and client requirements.

Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Strong experience within the MEP / Building Services sector across both design and construction environments.
  • Experience working for both an MEP Design Consultancy and an MEP Contractor or Main Contractor.
  • Previous experience as an MEP Design Manager, Design Manager, Senior Design Engineer or similar.
  • Strong understanding of the complete design and construction process, including coordination and buildability.
  • Experience working on residential and commercial projects.
  • Ability to review, challenge and technically validate MEP designs.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical building services.
  • Excellent communication, meeting management and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop solutions and drive actions through to completion.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

A relevant engineering or building services qualification would be advantageous.
