UK citizenship required. Relocation assistance may be available. Travel required 10% of the time. The role is based in New Malden (hybrid working). Salary is £70,000 – £85,000, depending on experience. Relevant UK Government security clearance (SC or eligible) is required. This position is part of Northrop Grumman UK’s control systems account, supporting the delivery of multi‑domain command and control systems for the Royal Navy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the allocated SE team in specifying, planning, completing and delivering Systems Engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Produce and review project technical documentation to support the project schedule.
  • Prepare for and successfully deliver key design reviews (e.g. SRR/PDR/CDR) in accordance with Systems Engineering processes and the programme schedule.
  • Provide technical management of suppliers, ensuring requirements and design baselines are maintained.
  • Review and challenge technical documentation received from customers and suppliers.
  • Lead and support reviews with the customer and key suppliers.
  • Ensure adequate integration with other engineering functions involved in the program delivery (hardware, mechanical, software, V&V, ILS, IA, safety, etc.).
  • Manage tracking and reporting of technical and task outputs to meet time, cost and quality targets.
  • Provide line management of assigned Systems Engineers, including skill development, timesheet management, personal development and reporting.
  • Drive decision‑making for exceptional activities or deviations.
  • Support risk, program and design reviews.
  • Design, develop and qualify engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with approved management plans and design methods.
  • Engage effectively with the practice and governance team on program constraints, challenges and changes.
  • Ensure deliverables are appropriately reviewed and checked by competent persons through single‑discipline and inter‑discipline checks.
  • Lead team risk and opportunity management and support estimation activities.

Qualifications

  • Degree‑qualified in a relevant engineering or technical subject (e.g., Systems Engineering, Software, Electrical Engineering or similar).
  • 3–5 years’ experience in a Systems Engineering role within defence, maritime, aerospace or a similarly regulated industrial sector, including supervisory activities.
  • Experience in systems requirements management, definition, design, integration, acceptance and analysis.
  • Knowledge of control systems and familiarity with PLC, SCADA and related operational technology systems.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering models and techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels, using well‑developed influencing and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with model‑based design techniques and tools such as Enterprise Architect.
  • Team leadership experience or a strong aptitude for managing and developing people.
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in requirements management using tools such as DOORS.
  • Knowledge of marine electronic equipment and/or the marine environment.
  • Familiarity with industry, military and environmental standards (e.g., ISO/IEC15288, DEFSTAN00‑35, 59‑411).
  • Knowledge and experience of engineering safety related systems (SIL2 /3).
  • Knowledge and experience of V&V activities, including IADT, environmental & EMC qualification with external test houses.
  • INCOSE associate or chartered Systems Engineering professional.
  • Ability to gain and maintain the relevant UK Government security clearance (SC).
