Undergraduate Industrial Placement Materials Scientist – Role & What You Will Be Doing
The Undergraduate Industrial Placement Materials Scientist will work within the Global Respiratory Group to support the development of respiratory medicines, including dry powder inhalers (DPIs), metered‑dose inhalers (MDIs) and nebulised products.
Responsibilities
- Carry out analytical activities required to deliver new respiratory products to clinical studies and commercialisation.
- Execute experiments to generate scientific understanding in the development of analytical methods, formulations and processes.
- Perform analyses related to clinical supplies, stability, and process scale‑up.
- Process data, highlight aberrant or suspect results and work with supervisor to investigate.
- Maintain laboratory documentation in accordance with good documentation practices.
- Maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation.
- Contribute to project delivery by carrying out other tasks such as laboratory housekeeping, ordering, and shipping samples as required.
Qualifications
- Registered in an undergraduate chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences degree programme with at least two years of study completed.
- Familiarity with the basic principles of analytical chemistry.
- Good IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point).
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to organise tasks, plan work and consistently achieve high‑quality results on time.
- Enthusiasm for a lab‑based role and strong written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of modern instrumental methods of analysis (e. g., particle sizing, FT‑IR, SEM, thermal analysis) is desirable.
- Experience or knowledge of inhalation product development or physical properties testing is desirable.
