When was the last time you built something you were genuinely proud of? Not another quick turnaround site where the client’s already bought a theme, but something properly crafted.
If you’re the kind of developer who actually cares about how things are built - clean code, reusable blocks, performance - then you’ll probably enjoy this one.
You’ll join a small, established digital agency that builds bespoke WordPress sites from scratch for clients in hospitality, education, and beyond. No page builders. No off-the-shelf templates. Everything’s custom.
The team’s around 15 people - big enough for stability, small enough that your work gets noticed. You’ll be the go-to WordPress specialist, working alongside a front-end dev and designer to create new themes, blocks and reusable components that actually move the needle for clients.
They care about balance too. The agency runs a 9-day fortnight, so every other Friday is off. It’s a proper day off - not one of those “catch up on work” Fridays.
You’ll work remotely day to day, but being based within reach of Birmingham helps for the odd meet-up or client visit.
Tech you’ll use: Modern WordPress (Gutenberg), PHP, JavaScript, GitHub, Node.js — plus occasional Laravel crossover.
You’ll fit if you:
- Have 3+ years’ experience building custom WordPress sites (ideally with Gutenberg).
- Care about code quality, accessibility, and performance.
- Prefer building things properly over dragging boxes around a page builder.
- Like being trusted to get on with your work without micromanagement.
Salary: £35,000–£40,000 depending on experience.
Benefits: 9-day fortnight, 22 days holiday (plus buy/sell options), work-from-home setup, 20% off Mitchells & Butlers restaurants.
