Europe PMC is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Outreach and Engagement Officer to join the Literature Services team at EMBL-EBI. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in connecting the global research community with one of the world’s leading open science resources. Europe PMC provides free and open access to over 47 million research outputs, including abstracts, full text, and preprints, enriched with links to data, reviews, protocols, and other resources. Europe PMC’s trusted open-access content and metadata are accessed through its website, APIs, bulk downloads and text-mining services, and reused in downstream tools, including AI-enabled applications. Supported by 35 international funders, it serves as a core infrastructure for open science and a trusted source of literature for millions of users worldwide. The way the community discovers and uses literature is rapidly changing, with AI tools, programmatic access, and text mining becoming increasingly common. This role will support efforts to engage both existing and new users, helping ensure Europe PMC remains visible and relevant in these evolving workflows. This will involve a variety of activities, including building collaborative relationships with aligned organisations, social media campaigns, written content, creating and delivering training, and attending meetings and events. You will also be expected to stay up-to-date with Open Science initiatives and how AI is changing the research lifecycle and the use of resources such as Europe PMC.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver day-to-day engagement activities, including managing social media channels; developing communication and campaign plans; liaising with partners; creating content; organising events, webinars and training; and evaluating engagement activities
- You will tailor messages, formats and channels for early-career and established researchers, as well as developers and text and data miners, recognising that these groups have different needs and ways of engaging
- Create clear, channel-appropriate content, including short-form posts for Bluesky, LinkedIn and relevant community channels such as Slack, alongside blog and news content, short videos, webinars, training resources and presentations
- Create and deliver training sessions for primary user groups and stakeholders of Europe PMC
- Develop and maintain webinars and on-demand training materials
- Monitor engagement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across social, web and training, communications to inform the Community Engagement strategy
- Share feedback gathered from the engagement activities to contribute to strategic planning for Europe PMC development
- Attending events, both virtually and in person, including relevant conferences and workshops
- Prepare and deliver presentations (talks and posters) and support others in the team to produce engaging slides and presentations
- Contribute to the Europe PMC website content and inform on design based on knowledge and expertise
Requirements
- You Will Have A degree or equivalent experience in Communications, Information Science or Life Sciences
- Experience of working within a communications or engagement or marketing role, within a research, scientific publishing, open science, or academic context
- Experience tailoring content and engagement approaches for distinct audiences, for example, early-career and established researchers, software developers, open science advocates and funders/institutions
- Leading development of the engagement strategy
- Planning and delivering effective communication or promotional campaigns and measuring their success
- Demonstrable experience managing organisational social media channels and increasing reach and engagement through audience insight and platform analytics
- Hands-on experience working in life sciences research or a scientific publishing domain
- Using social media tools, online training platforms or webinar/virtual meeting software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to deliver messages to a range of audiences
- You May Also Have Experience writing content with scientific or technical subject matter
- An interest in or awareness of open science or how AI is changing the research landscape
- Familiarity with AI tools relevant to communications work
- Data analysis experience
- Image/video editing software experience
Contract length: 3-year fixed term contract
Salary: Grade 5 monthly salary starting at £3,452.00 per month after tax but excluding pension and insurance contributions. Plus, generous benefits.
