Overview

We are seeking a Full Stack Software Developer to join the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

ENA is a leading repository of nucleotide sequence data, supporting submission, validation, processing and dissemination of sequencing data at scale.

The ENA team develops software infrastructure including data processing pipelines, submission systems, APIs, and web interfaces such as the ENA Browser to enable researchers to explore and retrieve archived data.

You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of software developers and bioinformaticians working to support open science and FAIR data principles.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to globally used scientific infrastructure supporting research across genomics, biodiversity, infectious disease and related life sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of software systems that support ENA’s data submission, processing and presentation services.
  • Work across the full technology stack, contributing to backend services, large-scale data processing pipelines and APIs, as well as user-facing web applications.
  • Support the development and improvement of ENA’s submission systems and data processing pipelines that handle sequencing datasets submitted by researchers worldwide.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the ENA Browser and related web services to improve usability, performance and scalability for data exploration and retrieval.
  • Collaborate with other developers and bioinformaticians within EMBL-EBI and with INSDC partners to build reliable, scalable and maintainable software for long-term archiving and accessibility of nucleotide sequence data.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A university degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing full-stack software applications.
  • Strong programming experience with Java and the Spring framework.
  • Experience developing frontend applications using Angular and Type Script.
  • Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
  • Experience working with relational and/or No SQL databases (e. g., Postgre SQL, Oracle, Mongo DB).
  • Familiarity with search technologies such as Elasticsearch.
  • Experience with containerisation (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes).
  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments, including Git and command-line tools.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; good communication and English language skills.
  • Desirable: exposure to graph databases (e. g., Neo4j), monitoring/observability tools (Grafana or Kibana), CI/CD pipelines (Git Lab), knowledge of OAuth 2.0/OIDC, authentication & authorization, and FAIR data principles; experience with large scientific datasets or bioinformatics resources; experience in international or multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • Contract and Compensation
  • Contract length: Project-based, 18 months fixed-term Staff Member contract.
  • Salary: Grade 5 – monthly salary starting at £3,425.05 per month after tax, plus generous benefits (pension, private medical insurance, etc.).
